Warm and healthy animals, all year round Supa Shavings is helping to keep animals around New Zealand warm and dry with its special wood shaving bedding products. “Keeping animals warm and healthy is the key to successful farming. Our products help our customers to keep productivity high and animal health problems low,” says Supa Shavings owner and manager Eric Tait. Made from untreated New Zealand pine timber, the kiln-dried pinewood shavings are of exceptional quality and sourced locally. They provide a natural, dry and deodorised rest area for a range of animals such as calves, chickens, goats and horses. They are also used for household pets and the company has a speci ic size product for smaller animals. Eric says that wood shavings provide underfoot comfort to animals, which brings a host of bene its to both animals and their owners. It means fewer injuries and general increased wellbeing. Moisture absorption means rest areas are clean and dry. All of these factors contribute to happy, productive and healthy animals. And in today’s environmentally conscious world the disposal of the product is also something that needs to be considered and with Supa Shavings it’s easy. As it’s 100% natural it can be simply used as compost creating a triple win for the environment, animals and the client’s land or garden. It was in 2005 that Eric bought Supa Shavings, which has already been quietly making a name amongst animal owners. The company has since grown hugely from one part time sta member to employ a team of 18 full time sta and four permanent contract drivers. It produces around 5000 cubic metres of shavings per week re lecting the company’s massive growth and the continually increasing popularity of the products. Supa Shavings boasts dedicated manufacturing and packing facilities in Otorohanga, Whanganui and Rotorua. It has its own leet of modern trucks for deliveries giving it total control over the timing of its supply chain from start to inish. Eric says strict hygiene and biosecurity protocols are enacted for true peace of mind. He says that Covid-19 has made logistics challenging but that the experience of Supa Shavings means it knows how to forward plan and store enough stock so that it can meet customer demand no matter what. Supa Shavings aims to foster long term, trusted relationships with clients so people know they can rely on the company to meet their requirements. Supa Shavings products include 40 litre pet packs and 100kg Supa bales. It can also work with larger customers to produce custom options and supply in bulk loads. For example for Cobb Vantros it has worked to produce the right quantity and quality of product in a way that is easy for the customers to pick up from the Supa Shavings depot. As all Supa Shavings products meet the New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries’ export accreditation, it exports and can ship customers’ orders overseas if required. Supa Shavings products can also be found at Farmsource and other major rural supply stores. The concept was to supply 90-100kg bales of untreated, kiln dried, pinewood shavings for the dairy calf season and sold via rural merchants. This progressed into supply in the poultry industry and domestic market with 12-18kg packs. These are produced in two specialized balers imported from the UK. Supa Shavings is MPI accredited for its exports. Eric says the “bio security” standards assist the company in providing quality safe products. All containers are “farm specific”. They are sanitised prior to use and staff are all required to maintain a very high standard, similar with that in a veterinary hospital. Covid is proving another challenge as livestock don’t understand about lockdowns, so the need to have good stock on hand is vital to ensure our clients can continue their operations. We operate our own fleet of truck and trailer units and have depots in Otorohanga, Rotorua and Wanganui.
