Cordis opened its new 17-storey tower last December, becoming New Zealand’s largest hotel by room count. Architects Jasmax designed the impressive new addition that includes 244 new rooms and suites, sleek, streamlined interiors and incredible views of prominent Auckland landmarks. Auckland based interior design practice Space Studio, which specializes in premium hotel and resort projects throughout New Zealand and the Asia Pacific, created the tower’s luxury interior. Space Studio has a long-standing involvement with the hotel, having previously been engaged as part of Langham’s rebranding of the hotel in 2018 to Cordis, Auckland. “A key focus for us was to ensure the tower interior would still be in keeping with the existing hotel but would also lift the brand to new heights,” says Space Studio Associate Designer David Sweatman. “The new extension gave a lot more opportunity to take advantage of natural light and incredible views.” Selected colours and textures are restrained and refined in keeping with the 5-star luxury brand while also expressing aspects of Aotearoa’s natural environment. Virtually all furniture was custom designed by Space Studio and manufactured by Titan Furniture. “We were working very closely with them, prototyping, testing, and trialing Supplying stylish, contemporary furniture for Cordis Auckland’s luxurious 17-storey Pinnacle Tower building was a memorable project for specialist Auckland-based commercial furniture manufacturer and provider, Titan Furniture. These were approved by the designer before going into full production. For the guest rooms, these items included the mini bar, bedside table, desk chair and desk. “We also supplied one-o furnishings for executive lounges and suites, including custom made pieces for particular rooms with the desired luxurious look and feel.” Titan Furniture o ers a vast range of hand-selected imported furniture to complement the New Zealand made items. “Some of the one-o pieces, for example in the Chairman Suite, came from Italy.” Understated high end elegance and natural tones are a hallmark of the Pinnacle Tower’s interior. The quality of furnishings supplied by Titan Furniture underpin the unique, relaxing, and rejuvenating city retreat experience. “There can be a lot of time and conversation involved in the design of a small piece of furniture like a minibar because it is so intrinsic to the guest experience. It’s a complicated process. Our role is simply to make what the designers want and deliver for the architect and customer.” Graham and the Titan team value the working relationships they have with designers such as Space Studios, who are prepared to listen and be responsive when challenges arise. In today’s Covid environment, those challenges can include lockdowns and supply chain disruptions and delays. “All credit to Cordis, Auckland for pushing through the challenges to bring 17 loors of beautiful, new upscale accommodation to the city.” Premier furniture and fit out solutions from Titan Furniture Visit Titan Furniture at 34-36 Honan Place, Avondale, Auckland 1026 (09) 828 1079 | sales@titanfurniture.co.nz | www.titanfurniture.co.nz FURNITURE & FITOUT SOLUTIONS everything to make sure the final product would work well. We used very few off the shelf products. “As well as making sure we would meet the standards of the Cordis brand, there were a number of other parameters to consider such as making sure everything would be the right height and within reach. Ultimately, everything had to be designed to be intuitive for the guest. There were layers and layers of detail and consideration.” The experience of transition from the existing hotel reception to the new tower and guest rooms is a memorable one, shaped by a narrative that was developed with the mana whenua of central Tāmaki Makaurau, Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei. It includes Māori concepts of Te Whai Ao (light), Manawa (heart) and Kaitiakitanga (guardianship). The transition starts with a specially curated art promenade, inspired by the landscape of Auckland. Further engagement with local culture and art is invited as guests move through the levels. “When you reach your room, you have effectively reached the light and journey’s end. It is really fascinating to experience that transition through the hotel.” David was invited to spend a night in the Pinnacle Tower with his two young sons earlier this year. “It was amazing to see how the interiors, furniture and architecture complemented and supported the incredible service, food and philosophy of the whole luxury operation.” Other outstanding hotel and resort projects completed by Space Studio include Six Senses Fiji, Grand Windsor by M Gallery, and Gibbston Valley Lodge.
