His role is to support the entire project team to deliver a successful outcome and the fact he is a Registered Architect means he knows the design side of a build and what the architects Lindesay Construction works with require to deliver successful results, says Hamish. “Our philosophy is excellence in all things while delivering value to clients through careful, transparent management of projects,” says Hamish. “Our hand-picked builders have the skills to work alongside design teams and clients to make an architect’s vision a reality, forming lasting relationships along the way.” Hamish says Lindesay Construction believes that building homes is a craft and securing the right team is important. Lindesay Construction trains its own staff and around 10% of its builders are women, something the company has strived to increase by working with industry training organisations recognising the inequality that exists in the industry. Without wanting to generalise, Hamish says women bring a unique perspective and skills to a build including often an eye for detail and design combined with a strong work ethic. “We look for people with the right attitude because we are constantly doing stuff on builds that people will have never done before.” As an example Lindesay Construction is currently working on homes in a Te Arai development near Mangawhai with some pretty unique features. There is teak cladding and exterior joinery from Secco in Italy that is solid stainless steel on one house and solid brass on the other. “It’s the ‘Ferrari’ of joinery,” says Hamish. “There is only one person in New Zealand who probably knows how to install it. We have floor to ceiling joinery up to four metres high. One of the homes also has stacked doors that slide into the floor and disappear.” Covid-19 has also increased challenges on builds, particularly as the materials that Lindesay Construction uses are so unique they must be sought internationally. With global shipping lines disrupted, and demand meaning that some ships do not even come to New Zealand as they can simply deliver product to markets closer to home, this has seen a Lindesay Construction project manager work almost full time to procure materials. “We have to search around the world for materials – we can’t just go down to the local hardware store for some things,” says Hamish. He does acknowledge that relationships have been extremely important in securing materials and close relationships with suppliers such as Carters in Mangawhai and ITM Matakana have been key. “Some suppliers have worked really hard for us, being very proactive and searching the country to find what we need well in advance, sometimes holding materials for us until we need them,” he says. “It also boils down to communication with the client and how to manage risk as projects typically take years. For example some have chosen to purchase materials well in advance to secure pricing.” Other trends he is noticing in the homes Lindesay Construction is building are sustainability and off-grid. “Clients want to lower their carbon footprint, build healthier homes and things like air flow have become important since Covid-19. We are seeing homes literally designed around the services and infrastructure, something in the past we would have only seen in a commercial build.” It’s just more examples of how Lindesay Construction and its skilled team keep on the cutting edge of the building industry and continue to deliver some of the most high end homes being built in New Zealand. “We have an absolute passion for architecture and craftsmanship. We’ve very proud of what we do, building some of the most exciting residential homes in New Zealand.”
