The name derives from their initials and John has no plans to change it. John started working with the company when he and his wife Sarah returned from the UK 10 years ago, and they bought it from his parents, Rob and Theresa Van Huenen, when they were ready to retire two years ago. “My uncle was out of it by then, and Dad was mainly doing handyman work and small renovations. I was already a qualified builder and we just started doing much bigger renovations and new houses as well,” says John. “We’ve been taking on a guy every year almost, to where we are now, with 11 of us. Mum used to do all the admin and run the office and Sarah has now taken that over too.” Last year John and Sarah moved out of Auckland and back to the hub of the business, Waiuku, where they both grew up. “Our friends and family were already here,” says John, “and it’s good value compared to Auckland for the same money. Here we’ve got an acre and we’re surrounded by farmland with a house and a pool.” John says there’s a trend of people looking at the potential of what they can do to upgrade the house they already own, which has helped spur on his company’s growth. These days Rags Renos Ltd. does major renovations to houses, bungalows and villas as well as doing new builds for clients as highend as they want them to be.
