| 25 EPL Construction is engaged in a wide variety of work. DEVELOPMENT EPL Construction St Cuthberts College, and recently at the local Whangamata Area School, afforded Sheridan with the opportunity to explain just how important Civil Engineering is. “I spoke about all the great career options Civil Engineering leads to. On a field trip to a water treatment plant we were building, I asked them to think about where the water in their water bottles comes from and how it is always of good quality. “That kind of brought the message home about how important what we do is.” Sheridan’s work in the industry was recognised last year in receiving the Bay of Plenty Civil Contractors NZ ‘Women in Civil’ Award. “Our local CCNZ rep said to us that we should think about entering as our company engages in some really interesting and complicated projects. We entered in the projects category and I was entered in the Women In Civil award.” Sheridan has a long and impressive history in civil engineering. While still studying she worked as a Trainee Engineer for HEB Construction. Having graduated in 2006 she continued with the company as a Project Engineer/Manager in Mt Maunganui. In all, Sheridan worked for HEB until 2018, having moved to several locations around New Zealand and in Australia, responsible for the management of a wide array of projects, including Raglan’s iconic new 140m long Kopua footbridge in Raglan in 2011. “I had sole responsibility on this project which involved installing/removing 150m of temporary staging for crane access to build the new bridge and removing the old footbridge structure at sea level.” Then in 2020, Sheridan realised a career goal by purchasing shares in EPL Construction and becoming a Co-Director. She says a key focus is growing and diversifying the business. While undertaking large projects, the company itself is economic in size, with 12 permanent staff. “We do punch well above our weight. We have a reputation for innovation and excellence, a strong commitment to Client service and a proven track record for delivering difficult projects. We have a great team but are on the lookout for like-minded, hard working people to join our team. If there’s one message Sheridan wants to impart, it is that Civil Construction is part of a very rewarding industry to build a career around. “There’s so much to it, from the practical outside work, project management, financial planning, problem solving, tendering and procurement. “There is a huge sense of achievement and pride you get from building a piece of infrastructure that other people get to benefit for years to come.
