36 | Luke leads the way Rosewarne Yarding won the Harvester of the Year award and was a Contractor of the Year finalist. Northland Forestry Awards: Rosewarne Yarding FORESTRY Richard Loader Winning the 2022 Skilled Professional of the Year — the Supreme Award in the individual categories— at the Northland Forestry Awards affirmed Luke Rosewarne’s own place in an industry that is well represented by the wider Rosewarne family. Established in 2015 by Luke and his wife Karyn, Rosewarne Yarding, also won the Harvester of the Year award, and was a Contractor of the Year finalist. Luke’s journey in the forestry industry follows a successful career as a boat builder that culminated as shore crew member in the 2013 America’s Cup campaign in San Francisco. Returning to New Zealand, Luke opted for a career change, and his parents encouraged a move to forestry. Moving to Northland to work in his parent’s logging crew, Luke learned the forestry industry from scratch, covering everything from ground-based logging, assisting the mechanical and engineering team, through to gaining his tickets as a machine operator, while earning the trust and respect of the team around him. Over a two year period Luke worked his way to becoming foreman of crew 78 before establishing Rosewarne Yarding Ltd, and purchasing a Madill Swing Yarder. In 2019 Rosewarne Yarding was able to finance the rest of the logging equipment, taking over an existing crew. “We were extremely lucky that all eight crew members chose to stay with us,” says Karyn. “They’re an experienced hard working crew with a wealth of knowledge and we definitely would not be in the position we’re in now if it wasn’t for them and their commitment to us.” While Karyn’s close involvement in the business was quite a dramatic shift from her background as a social worker, she says her skill sets have complemented those of Luke’s, offering an understanding personal touch when it comes to the crew. “The crew do really long hours, and they have families. Making sure they have time off as it’s needed, and recognising good hard work is so important to keeping a happy team that feels valued. The same for Luke — he’s always there, always available. It’s listening to your staff.” Karyn says that being nominated for both the Harvester of the Year, and Contractor of the Year awards, and to have those nominations supported by Rayonier Matariki, was a wonderful endorsement that Rosewarne Logging was recognised for its quality work and commitment. “Our success on the night was somewhat unexpected to be honest but we were extremely proud, particularly for Luke to be named Skilled Professional of the Year, as all nominees for the awards are included in the category and the competition is pretty fierce. “The award’s might have Luke’s name on them but he can’t do what he does on his own. He has achieved what he has through the support of the team. We make a point of taking our crew along to the awards with us, because we think it’s important that they see what is going on in the industry and they can make the connections about how the industry works. “There’s a huge infrastructure that makes up this industry, including silviculture, logging and cartage, so taking the time to acknowledge the people behind it helps remind us why we do this type of work.” www.financenz.co.nz The home of business finance in New Zealand Sean Dowling Business Finance Adviser p: 027 232 7900 Ĭ ÝÃljÊõ¼ªÃ¢ŶĆÃÃÃĀljÊljÃĀ aÊ ªÝéÝÝ Ãû éݪÃÝÝ ĆÃà ÙØéªÙÂÃäÝ ÊÃääĬ [à Êõ¼ªÃ¢ õÊé¼ ¼ª¹ äÊ ÊâÙäé¼ä §ªÝ ¼ªÃäÝ ;é¹ Ã 9Ùûà WÊÝõÙà Êà 䧪٠ÝéÝÝ ä ä§ ČĊČČ BÊÙ䧼à #ÊÙÝäÙû õÙÝlj We are New Zealand’s largest Business Finance Adviser proudly Ê¡¡ÙªÃ¢ 䪼ÊÙ ĆÃà ÝʼéäªÊÃÝ äÊ §¼Ö éݪÃÝÝÝ ćÊé٪ݧ à Âä ä§ ÂÃÝ Ê¡ Ãõ §¼¼Ã¢Ý à ÊÖÖÊÙäéêäªÝlj
