Business North March 2023

50 | Airzone Richard Loader Awards important for business growth Airzone supports many of the top commercial construction companies in Northland, its customers including Bay of Islands Airport. CONTRACTING Submitting entries into the Northland Business Excellence Awards provided Airzone, an innovative commercial Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning (HVAC) solutions provider, with an opportunity to reflect on its business performance over the last few years, says General Manager Terry Dawson. Airzone entered the Work Place Safety, and Large Business Excellence categories, and was named Finalists in each category. While unsuccessful at the award’s celebration, Terry says Airzone and the team were privileged and honoured to be chosen as finalists. “The businesses that won were well deserving and we congratulate them. We walked away absolutely positive and content. The awards present an opportunity for a celebration of how northern businesses have grown, and their successes. “It also provides an opportunity to engage with the business community, which is really important and especially for businesses in the smaller towns. “I took my whole senior leadership team to the awards evening, enabling them to enjoy the celebration as well as see familiar faces and network with other businesses closely aligned to ours.” While there was quite a bit of work involved in putting a submission in, Terry comments that in itself provided an opportunity to reflect on the business’s journey. “There are six in the senior leadership team, including myself. Putting a submission in brought up quite a few points of discussion with the senior leadership team. I think that’s pretty important for the growth of a senior leadership team and the business. “The submission process and the social event was a good team building opportunity, which is ultimately good for the business. To see everyone’s names up on the screen and know how much work the team has put into taking the business forward like it has in the last few years, was very rewarding.” From small beginnings forty-two years ago, Airzone has enjoyed significant organic growth and now employs a team of fifty-five offering a diverse range of skill sets including HVAC engineers, design engineers, project engineers and electricians. Encompassing everything from mechanical design, project management, installation, commissioning, service and repair along with full electrical services, Airzone is at the leading edge of Commercial HVAC systems. Complementing Airzone’s one-stop approach to the range of services offered, Airzone has its own sheet metal shop enabling the fabrication of much of its own HVAC ducting components. Based in Whangarei, the team at Airzone routinely operates from the top of the North Island down to Warkworth with a small facilities team based at Channel Infrastructure Marsden Point looking after its landscaping, cleaning, plumbing and general facility requirements. Terry says while Airzone has in the past been engaged to do some very high-end residential projects, the company is predominantly focused on the commercial sector. “We pride ourselves on successfully partnering with local government, commercial, industrial and infrastructure customers. The more complicated and intricate the projects the better they are for us. We tend to thrive on those really complicated hard to do projects that challenge the team.
