76 | PRODUCTION Southern Cross Horticulture Karen Phelps New orchard development underway to page 80 SCH continues to plant and develop new orchards with its latest project, Hereford Park Orchard Limited Partnership currently underway. Located in Pukehina, 20km east of Te Puke, this development will eventually encompass 173 hectares of land and will be planted with SunGold and Zespri RubyRed kiwifruit. The first stage of the development spans 55 hectares with the first crop expected in 2025. Stage two of the land development will comprise 50ha followed by another 50ha in the third stage. Andrew says Opportunities still exist for qualified investors in stage one, which offers a great location and climate, a mix of both gold and red kiwifruit, and both development and producing orchard cash flow and value characteristics. Andrew says SCH is one of the few developers who can offer high-performing turn-key orchard developments and has a track record of delivering short times from planting to crop, initial crops materially larger than industry average, and ongoing high-end orchard performance. Kiwifruit production and sales have grown strongly since 2013 and it is now New Zealand’s biggest horticultural export, with offshore sales of $2.6b in the year to March 2021, representing a 14% increase on the previous year.
