| 95 JCC Build BUILDING Kelly Deeks Builder proud of top apprentice Malcolm Bell and Will Johnston. JCC Build apprentice Malcolm Bell has been named as one of the top three building apprentices in the Waikato region at the 2022 Registered Master Builders’ Carters Apprentice of the Year competition. Competition judges say Malcolm is a capable apprentice who fosters great relationships with colleagues and clients, shows good health and safety practices, demonstrated great leadership qualities on site and a fantastic understanding of detail for the complicated apartment building reclad in the building project he submitted with his entry. As well as submitting his entry, Malcolm took part in a two-hour practical challenge where he was tasked with building a saw stool. This took him into the top 10, where he had an interview with a judging panel and an on-site visit to discuss his project. JCC Build business manager Murray Buchanan says the team is super proud of Malcolm and his achievements, and the submitted project was a big part of his growth and development. “It was a big job that went for the best part of a year,” Murray says. “Malcolm is very studious as well. He takes his apprenticeship seriously, he does his book work, and he was able to demonstrate to the competition judges that he had gone through a learning process with this project.” JCC Build has plenty of upcoming challenges for the Waikato’s third best apprentice to overcome in the last year of his apprenticeship. “We do a lot of renovation work and some big new builds as well, so most of our work isn’t your standard stand, strap, and wrap,” Murray says. “What we do is pretty involved, and Malcolm is going to come out of his apprenticeship a complete builder.” New apprentices at JCC Build are placed in a strong team where they work directly with BCITO and are supported by their foreman on site. With JCC Build working on a wide range of building projects, from hanging a door to large projects like the current build of a duplex at in Hamilton, apprentices can hone their practical skills and their problem solving on different types of building with a variety of challenges. “We are a very supportive team as well,” Murray says. “We are less than 20 so we have that real family feel.” JCC Build clients are usually looking for a bespoke solution and to accommodate this, the company offers a slightly more flexible service and proven systems and processes which ensure effective communication and capture cost changes along the way. “Our service and our results are very much tailored to what our clients need, with the opportunity to change and add things as the project progresses. We can accommodate our clients’ architects and interior designers, or if they are a developer and want to manage part of it themselves we can accommodate that as well. We’ve got a system that enables great communication, and that is key.” “We do a lot of renovation work and some big new builds as well, so most of our work isn’t your standard stand, strap, and wrap.” www.leadingedgeelectrical.co.nz 0800 453 234 Proud to work with the team at JCC Build.
