ARCHITECTURE Studio Fox Architects T T Bernadette Cooney With a portfolio spanning high-end residential, multi-unit developments, and urban revitalisations, Studio Fox Architects of Auckland continues to set benchmarks for architectural innovation across New Zealand. A registered architect with over two decades of experience, Ron Fox took ownership of Swan Riley Architects Ltd with two other directors in 2010. Having worked for Swan Riley since 2003, Ron took the opportunity to continue the company when its three directors decided to move on. One of Ron Fox’s first projects was the completion of Point Ridge, a master-planned, resort- style village in Albany Heights that first began in 2002. “I was lead architect on this project, carrying it over to completion in 2021,” Ron says. This gated community comprises 188 homes – a mix of high-end townhouses, single-level apartments and hillside villas. The design includes hotel-style swimming pool and spa, community recreation room, gymnasium and community barbecue areas. “Low-rise, multi-residential housing, duplexes and terraced housing is our forte,” says Ron. “We’ve done quite a few now, and of course a lot of high-end residential.” A Master Builders’ gold medal award-winning project from Studio Fox Architects is Ocean Point Apartments, comprising 28 luxury beachfront apartments at Orewa Beach, with diverse layouts including two penthouses and duplex apartments, and 16 three-bedroom and eight two-bedroom apartments. All are surrounded by well-designed communal spaces with a swimming pool, spa, and underground carpark with lift access to all units. Another noteworthy project is the Point Chevalier House, which also earned a Master Builders Gold Award. This bespoke residential home demonstrates Studio Fox’s commitment to integrating indoor and outdoor spaces seamlessly. Strategic openings, sunlit interiors, and thoughtfully designed living areas create a harmonious connection with nature. Also a Master Builders’ Gold Award recipient is the Chatswood House, which exemplifies luxury and versatility. Designed for a dynamic lifestyle, the residence combines sophisticated architecture with unique outdoor experiences, highlighting Studio Fox’s prowess in crafting one-of-a-kind homes. Bridgewater Quay Apartments in Whanganui showcases Studio Fox Architects capability in revitalising existing structures. This project transformed a 1970s’ railway building into 26 modern apartments. With a focus on maximising space and blending contemporary design with historic charm, the development has become a highlight of Whanganui’s waterfront. Upcoming projects include a top-tier apartment development in Auckland, at 15 Nugent Street, Grafton. Pending construction but available for presales, this city-fringe development is a six-storey building offering 98 two- and three-bedroom luxury apartments atop a two-level basement of parking and service areas. Designed with convenience and urban connectivity in mind, the development is close to major motorways and a few minutes’ walk from the Grafton and Mt Eden Rail Link. Studio Fox Architects are registered architects able to take on the scale and complexity of multi-residential developments, adding expertise and confidence to every project. “I think there’s a real need for well-thoughtout, multi-residential developments across Auckland and other regions of New Zealand. Bespoke residences in choice locations that fit with the area and are highly functional,” says Ron.
