ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN Nala Studio Architects Crafting exceptional architectural solutions for diverse New Zealand lifestyles is a key strength of Nala Studio Architects of Auckland and Queenstown. Founded by registered architect Noor Keary in 2017, the studio has an impressive portfolio of new residential builds, renovations and extensions, multi-unit conversion projects, bespoke apartments and terraced housing, and commercial and educational projects. A New Zealand-registered architect since 2013, Noor brings nearly two decades of experience to her practice. Working alongside her are Bulgarian registered architect Deni Star and architectural designer Andrew Knight, both of whom are Greenstar accredited designers. Noor herself is a passive house-accredited designer, an expertise she champions in both warm climates and cooler regions. “Incorporating passive house design may seem counter intuitive in Auckland and Northland, but passive homes work both ways. It keeps the house cool in summer as well as warm in winter,” Noor explains. From reimagining heritage villas to designing residential sanctuaries, Nala Studio Architects combines expertise and empathy to create spaces that inspire and endure. “We like to thoroughly understand how people are going to use the space. Little things, like who likes to cook and who likes to supervise with a glass of wine,” says Noor. “Do you have kids? Do you like to have get-togethers? All the things that express how you live and work in a space. There’s no point in delivering a sculptural masterpiece that doesn’t work for the people who will use it every day.” Current and pending projects for Nala Studio Architects include the design of a hydrotherapy pool and multi-purpose facility for a special needs primary school in Auckland. “This project is incredibly meaningful. It’s about creating a space that truly enhances the quality of life for its users,” Noor says. A collaboration with Substrait Construction is the current renovation of an old Lockwood home in Hillsborough, Auckland. “This will transform its dark and closed-off interior, opening out to both the east and the west. Also creating an entrance way, as often they didn’t have front doors, but rather a ranch slider opening straight into the living room.” Another project partnership underway with Substrait Construction is the full renovation and extension of a heritage character villa in Onehunga. “This will modernise the interior and extend the back of the house to make it work for a couple with three university-age children and their partners,” says Noor. Converting existing single properties to tasteful multi-unit residences is another forte of Nala Studio Architects. This could be converting an existing larger dwelling into two or three residences, or remodelling property levels to accommodate a rental property. Also adept at commercial multi-unit apartments and terraced housing, Nala Studio Architects prioritise creating communities over characterless apartment blocks. Many of Nala Studio’s Auckland and Queenstown residential projects have earned private and public acclaim for their innovative form and function. From an award-winning rustic farmhouse in Coatesville to a three-level mountain refuge overlooking the Shotover River in Queenstown and a beachfront retreat in Whakatane, Nala Studio Architects exudes architectural excellence on every project.
