Ben Lloyd, who co-directs the award-winning practice alongside Mike Hartley, says Lloyd Hartley approaches each project as a complete journey, guiding clients through architectural decisions, interior design choices, hard landscaping and even the selection of finishing touches like rugs and cutlery. “We want to be with people the whole way through the process, and take our role very seriously in delivering a great result. As a practice we are focused on the art of craft, but in a way that is realistic,” says Ben. The practice’s recent short listing in the 2024 Registered Master Builders National Awards, for a project dubbed ‘Shifting Focus’ completed with Norwest Build, showcases its ability to merge artistic vision with practical execution. “This project was aiming to create a tied island as a main suite for the clients, separated from the remainder of the house. Connecting it, but keeping an element of privacy,” says Ben. He says detailed planning and execution were crucial to its success. The project’s complexity required innovative solutions, including full-scale mock-ups of key junctions created by suppliers to ensure seamless execution. Ben says this attention to detail characterises Lloyd Hartley’s methodology. Since its establishment 12 years ago, the practice has built a reputation for delivering high-end residential homes and multi-home developments. Ben says Lloyd Hartley’s comprehensive service model sets it apart in an industry where architects often focus solely on design and documentation. This comprehensive approach has positioned Lloyd Hartley well for expansion into new areas, including boutique hotels, resorts and bespoke retail environments. Ben says the practice actively manages relationships with suppliers and contractors, ensuring that innovative designs translate into achievable outcomes. He says this collaborative approach proved particularly valuable in the ‘Shifting Focus’ project, where soft curves and complex junctions required careful coordination between design intent and construction capability. He says the success of Lloyd Hartley’s approach was evident in its client testimonial for the tied island project, which saw clients praise its ability to work within budget constraints while maintaining design quality. Ben says the practice achieved this by finding creative alternatives that preserved the intended aesthetic and functionality without compromising standards. As members of Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects, the practice maintains high professional standards. Ben says focus is placed on the importance of registration with the New Zealand Registered Architects Board, with all staff either registered or working towards registration. Currently, the practice is expanding its portfolio with several significant projects. It has recently completed a large project in Omaha exploring the boundaries of brick cladding through various curves, and a renovation in Melbourne, while construction is underway on terrace houses north of Auckland. Two additional projects in the Coromandel are poised to begin construction, demonstrating the practice’s growing influence in the region. “Our job is to realise the best version of how people want to live and we take seriously the delivery of a quality built outcome.” Ace Air Conditioning has been providing Heating & Cooling Solutions to Auckland Homes since 1980.
