BUILDING Becker Construction A Bay of Islands construction company specialising in high-end residential builds is expanding its operations to the South Island, demonstrating that regional builders can successfully operate nationwide with the right team and systems in place. Becker Construction, based in Russell, has announced plans to establish a South Island operation in 2025. The expansion follows Becker Construction’s track record of delivering high-end residential projects across New Zealand, from Hihi in the Far North to previous projects in Queenstown, as well as commercial developments in Nelson and Christchurch. “I don’t believe you need to be tied to one location as a builder,” says director and project manager Jed Roberts. “If you set the business up correctly with the right people there is no reason why a building company can’t operate nationwide.” After launching in 2014, Becker Construction has grown to a team of 10 staff, with a full calendar of work. Jed says it is the only company based in Russell with all local tradespeople that all come from a background of high-end building. Jed is a New Zealand Certified Builder (the only builder association in New Zealand with strict entry criteria where the minimum entry requirement for all members is a recognised industry trade qualification) and licensed building practitioner. He has built his company’s reputation on delivering architecturally designed homes that often require innovative solutions for challenging sites. The company’s approach to high-end residential construction emphasises transparent communication and strong client partnerships. The commitment to quality craftsmanship has been derived in part from Jed’s boat-building background, which has given him a strong focus on detail. He attributes much of the company’s success and ability to expand to its exceptional team. “After 25 years of building, I feel like I’m working with one of the best teams I’ve ever worked with,” he says. Currently, the company is showcasing its versatility through several projects in Russell. These include the hand demolition of a heritage home where native timber is being preserved for reuse and a community-focused project for the Russell Tennis Club, where it will work at cost to support the local organisation. “A lot of sentimental value was in that home as previous generations had built,” says Jed, referring to the heritage project, which will be transformed into a new, two-storey home complete with a lift, underground water tanks and complex retaining walls. Other current and recent projects include a seemingly straightforward deck reinstatement project, which has evolved into an intricate engineering challenge involving cantilever design and sophisticated steel work. Meanwhile, the company has recently completed a comprehensive three-storey renovation in Tapeka, which included removing and rebuilding the entire top storey and re-pitching the roof. Jed says that while expanding its geographical reach, Becker Construction aims to maintain its high standards and local ethos. Having been brought up in Russell he still remains firmly committed to having a strong base in that region. PROUDLY SUPPORTING BECKER CONSTRUCTION 021 274 2972 info@ashbyscaffolding.co.nz
