| 117 T T Hugh de Lacy Staff and subbies with skill sets in spades J Hamblin Carpentry recently completed a 15-month renovation of this beach-front home at Papamoa. J Hamblin Carpentry BUILDING He quit Cornwall for New Zealand’s sun, surf, and relaxed lifestyle, supposedly for six months, but that was 12 years ago and John Hamblin has since established himself as a specialist builder in Tauranga under the label of J Hamblin Carpentry. Renovations and extensions are John’s speciality – something he stumbled into because the first job he nailed in this country was with a Tauranga firm specialising in leaky home re-clads. He spent six years with that company before setting out on his own in the same challenging field, though he has since extended the range of his company’s work to non-leaky renovations and new builds. About 80% of J Hamblin Carpentry’s work is in renovations, with the leaky home disaster still providing a steady stream of work. With a staff of five, including himself on the tools, John tackles a source of work that not every builder would want to take on because of its potential complexity: you never know what state you will find the framing in behind the monolithic cladding of a leaky home. A typical such challenge recently completed was a beach-front home at Papamoa. It was in such a sad state, that not only the cladding, but also 95% of the internal framing had to be replaced. The work took J Hamblin Carpentry 15 months to complete, using StoArmour panels finished in the StoArmat render system, which was accented with cedar shiplap cladding and a wrap-around veranda featuring a glass balustrade, and with Vitex hardwood decking. The company is currently dealing with an older, Mediterranean-style beach-front home, which has to be converted from multiple roof-lines to mono-pitch with large eaves, incorporating the new Centrafix aluminium joinery system that features a thermal break with recessed glass in the framing to improve insulation. “Revonations and additions are not the easiest kind of work – they’re not every builder’s cup of tea – and they require a skill set that has to overcome all the possible challenges and issues that arise with them,” John says. “Fortunately we’ve got that in spades with the team at J Hamblin Carpentry, and we’re backed up by subbies we’ve come to value for the consistently high quality of their work. “I’ve a particular liking for one-man-bands among the sub-trades, because they tend to provide a more comprehensive and invested service since they’re not just out there to collect a paycheck.” Just such a one-man-band that John relies on is Trent Boyle of Tauranga’s Tap’d Out Plumbing, and another is James Dromgool of the electrical company that bears his name. A bigger partner on-site is Lee Hillier’s BrushCraft Painting that John brings in to get the painting jobs done quickly so he and his team can get on with the rest of the work. Josh Morrall of BJ Plasterers is the usual Gib-stopping subbie for J Hamblin Carpentry’s work. John has a commitment to bringing young talent forward in the industry through the apprenticeship system. He has seen five apprentices through to their full tickets, and has two more coming through.
