Waikato: Cambridge Homes - South Waikato REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT When the opportunity was presented to join the Cambridge Homes business, John Riggir jumped at the chance, propelled by the fact that running the franchise in the Waikato would offer him the scope to get fully involved in home design and building. John had known the Santner family, who established Cambridge Homes, for some time and he says the brand is particularly strong. He acquired the South Waikato franchise in mid-2020, and now in the fifth year of business, it is closing in on its first 50 homes built. Originally from an aviation background, John says one of the reasons he was attracted to Cambridge Homes was that he really related to the professional processes and systems Tim and Peter Santner had diligently put in place through their 20 years of creating Cambridge Homes. “We’re a very tight team, but we rely very heavily on our subcontractors, who we carry a great deal of respect for,” he says. Cambridge Homes South Waikato is a preferred builder, with its showh ome located in Te Awamutu’s Frontier Estate residential development, on the main road between Te Awamutu and the township of Pirongia. At 46 Pioneer Drive, viewers will discover Cambridge Homes’ luxury, country-style show home. Positioned at the gateway of Frontier Estate, the display home provides visitors with the experience and feel of the standard of craftsmanship, which John says sets Cambridge Homes apart. “We chose Hinuera Stone because it is local and is a beautiful stone to work with. It gives a very settled, solid feel to the home. The stone is quarried not far away, near Matamata, and it maintains its quality look to a remarkably high standard, separating it out from other building materials.” The stone also matches well with other dark tones and is extremely durable, John says. “We have now recently completed four homes in Hinuera stone, inspired by our show home, which has been a wonderful experience.” Ultimately, Frontier Estate will be home to 450 building sites, and work on developing the estate started pre-Covid. John says there has been “extraordinarily strong engagement” from the get-go with the developers. “The development is just fantastic, with elevated sections and incredible views. The developers have just put in a very high-tech recreational and play area for people living at the estate, and there are walks to blocks of native bush. The new commercial hub has started construction with a doctors and pharmacy the first tenants. This will be followed by a superette, café, and offices. A daycare centre is also to be built there, so this subdivision is going to really come into its own over time as people discover the benefits of living there. “The show home is built on a very wide section, so in its design, we decided to make the best use of this, by creating a ranch-style home, which suited the rural environment. We have tape measures everywhere for viewers to measure things up to get ideas as to what features they might like when we design and build their own home.
