| 59 Rosvall Sawmill Rosvall Sawmill processes over 70,000 tonnes of Northland logs each year, producing both structural and appearance-grade timber. REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Automation & Electronics (A&E) is a global business providing software and control solutions across multiple industries with a primary focus of timber processing. In New Zealand, A&E’s Tauranga-based team works closely with sawmill clients, such as Whangarei’s Rosvall Sawmill, to provide e cient wood processing solutions. Rosvall Sawmill is committed to continuous improvement across every aspect of their processing operation. The mill’s partnership with A&E, which spans more than 25 years, has been highly successful, with A&E’s tailored control systems driving ongoing gains in production. “Rosvall’s operators are very engaged: they know what they’re doing, what they want and, importantly, they can identify areas for improvement,” says Lance Mustard, General Manager at A&E. “Mark Hansen [Rosvall Sawmill’s Managing Director] encourages his team to seek out ways to improve. They have a really positive, proactive culture.” Over the last 12 months, A&E has upgraded the bulk of the mill’s control systems -including the edger, resaw and carriage – resulting in increased in production, improved accuracy and reduced reprocessing. All logs entering the mill are initially scanned to generate a 3D pro le on A&E’s cutting-edge optimisation software, “LogView3D”, the optimized itches then make their way to the edger and resaw. Using A&E’s EdgerView package operators can achieve optimal cutting results with speed and precision. “Rosvall Sawmill is one of my favorite companies, the culture and people make it something special. I’ve been involved in everything related to A&E for the past seven years. Seeing that constant improvement is so rewarding. I recently worked on upgrading a joystick for their edger to give them super ne control over positioning to ensure timber is in exactly the right place to cut. It’s now super quick, accurate and smooth, basically an extension of the operator. All these incremental improvements add up to big gains.” Established in 1986, A&E is now a Canadian-owned company with o ces in New Zealand and the United States. Partners include equipment manufacturer TS Manufacturing and leading kiln manufacturer Windsor Engineering. “We have a very wide skillset and access to incredibly knowledgeable people who can assist at any time.” Lance has a background as an industrial electrician and control systems engineer. He has been with Automation & Electronics for nearly eight years and took up the reins as general manager a year ago. “I love the company - we have a really good team. Most of what we do is sawmill-related and our software engineers are constantly re ning and developing new products and systems for the industry. We are pushing the boundaries with our geometric scanning software by leveraging the latest technology and achieving remarkable results. Watch this space, it is an exciting time to be part of A&E.” CONTACT Automation & Electronics Ltd T: 07 5746223 Email: sales@automationelec.com www.automationelec.com Tailored solutions driving e ciency gains in wood processing
