PFS Engineering ENGINEERING PFS Engineering’s ability to deliver largescale, complex, and award-winning projects has now benefitted the growing southwest Hamilton community of Peacocke with a major piece of new infrastructure connecting people to the city, prioritising walking and cycling, and protecting the health of the Waikato River. The new Peacocke Cycle Bridge by PFS Engineering is an architecturally striking 71- metre-long pedestrian and cycle bridge providing increased connection for the Peacocke community, which is set to grow to 20,000 residents, to the rest of the city and the wider region. It is a geometrically complex structure comprising five sections and almost 200 tonnes of weathering steel. Its simple box-beam structure is supported by stiffeners and diaphragms, which form the outer skin and deck. Two, 25m-high taurapa (steel masts) feature twin skins, with the external skin showcasing Māori artwork, and steel shrouds enclosing the earthquake bearings and joints, connecting them to the reinforced concrete cantilever beam and pier. PFS Engineering has been recognised amongst its peers for its skill on the Peacocke Cycle Bridge project, bringing home the 2024 Steel Construction New Zealand (SCNZ) Excellence in Steel Award in the $1.5M-$3M category. The 2024 awards were the most hotly contested awards to date, and produced some of the highest and closest scores ever seen in the SCNZ Awards. Peacocke Cycle Bridge was lauded for its reflection of the endless possibilities of structural steel, and the remarkable design and execution possible when steel is the primary construction material. PFS Engineering business development manager Adam Rickit says the excellence in this project starts with its local nature, with local government using local suppliers, and extends through to the fact the project utilised the full breadth of PFS Engineering’s business skills, from constructable design where PFS Engineering had input, right through to installation and completion of the job. “This contract was early contractor involvement, with Hamilton City Council recognising we have the skills to contribute towards making the design constructable and installing it,” Adam says. “Council representatives attended the awards night and they are extremely proud to have an award-winning bridge in their backyard. It’s an iconic-looking structure and an amazing piece of engineering.” PFS Engineering is a proudly locally owned Waikato business delivering trusted engineering solutions across New Zealand and Asia Pacific since 1992.
