CONTRACTING Applied Conveyor & Polymers With the quarrying and mining industries relying heavily on efficient and durable material handling systems to maintain productivity and safety, Applied Conveyor and Polymers has been built on quality, safety, and value for money on new investment. Applied Conveyor and Polymers is a conveyor belting, maintenance, and custom fabrication provider. “We may not be the cheapest, but we have the best-quality belt, hands down,” says CEO and founder Murray Harvey. “We are associated with Fenner Conveyors in Australia, owned by Michelin Tyre Company, and they produce a belt that’s up there with the best quality in the world.” While Chinese belts may only require half the investment, Applied Conveyor undertook several case studies during its early days in the late 1980s and proved Fenner Conveyors lasted for an average of nine years, versus about two years for belts produced in China. “Making a belt is a bit like making a cake. You can put all sorts of ingredients in to make it cheaper, but it’s not as good in terms of quality.” Over the next four decades, Applied Conveyor has had time to refine its products, and through Fenner, it now offers a diverse selection of robust belts tailored for the mining and quarrying industries, and designed to withstand the toughest environments. Applied Conveyor makes health and safety a prime objective, and its mission is sign-written on to all its company vehicles: Think safe, Work safe, Home safe. Working in close collaboration with its clients’ health and safety teams, Applied Conveyor takes on their health and safety policies and incorporates them into its own. “We are a small company compared to a lot of our clients, and our health and safety has to be at their level,” Murray says. “We want to be the safest conveyor belt provider in New Zealand, so we exchange information with our clients, we understand their operations, and we strive for a target of no injuries to anyone, ever.” Murray says as an industry, quarrying and mining does a really good job at looking after its people, and that comes down to everyone having buy in, from industry leaders to people working on plants. He says continuous improvement in this space is essential. “Everything is heavy in quarrying and mining, and if it fails, it hurts. You’ve got to question good procedures. Are good procedures good enough or can we do it better?” Applied Conveyor provides customised safety guarding products and solutions that exceed industry standards and prioritise worker safety while minimising downtime with easy installation. “Our products are resilient against rust, corrosion, and chemicals, ensuring long-term durability and reliability. They are 40% lighter than conventional steel guards, reducing strain-related injuries and improving workplace ergonomics.” Applied Conveyor helps its customers to achieve elevated production and safety targets by providing onsite plant maintenance surveys and conveyor safety audits.
