T T Hugh de Lacy CONTRACTING The hiring of a second apprentice just before Christmas reflects the growth that Whakatane company Altruck and Machinery Services has been going through. Now with a staff of seven, including owner Steve Cory and an office administrator, Altruck and Machinery Services has been developing steadily since Steve founded it from scratch in 2005, having outgrown its first premises and now starting to find things cramped in its second. The company specialises in truck and machinery repairs and servicing, working out of premises on Valley Road, Whakatane, that provide it with five covered and three outside bays accommodating truck and trailer units, and a wide range of machinery for repairs. Steve came out of his three-years mechanical engineering apprenticeship in 1985, working for the International Harvester Company in Wellington until it was sold off to an investment company that went through a couple of name changes and moved its operations to Whakatane. He was with that company for ten years before a friend offered to lease him a building in the town so he could launch out on his own, buying up all the necessary tools and setting up a well-equipped workshop and taking on a couple of employees. Within three years Altruck and Machinery Services had outgrown that building and shifted to its current home on Valley Road - and it looks as if it might be outgrowing that too, given the extra employee to be accommodated. Steve’s staff includes three qualified mechanics and two apprentices, with Steve dividing his time between the workshop floor and the office. “We’re really busy at the moment after coming out of Christmas last year with a lot of work, only to see it slow down quite a bit around June and July,” Steve says. “From August on it picked up sharply and there’s potential for expansion, but we’re close to the limits of what our present premises can handle, even though the owner has modified the building to allow us to fit more truck bays in.” Steve says the company’s core business is servicing trucks, including working closely with Vehicle Testing NZ in making assessments for Certificates of Fitness and delivering needed repairs and upgrades. Altruck and Machinery Services also does engine and gearbox re-builds, plus suspension work on trucks and trailers. “We’ve got all the plant necessary for the work we do, including a mobile crane truck and four truck lifts ranging in capacity from 10 tonnes to 30t,” he says. “We’ve also got a mobile hydraulic hose service truck that goes out onto trucking sites to repair hoses, and we’re the local agent for Enzed Hoses. “To round our services off we stock a comprehensive range of parts and equipment, including filters, bolts, suspension parts, lubricants, air fittings, piping, V-belts and brake products.” Altruck and Machinery Services’ client list is a who’s who of trucking businesses, including Horizon Energy, Waste Management New Zealand, the local company Kiwi Waste, owner-drivers, the NZ Fire Service, orchardists, tractor operators and rural contractors.
