Spatial Studio T T Nicki Woodlock ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN Auckland-based interior design practice, Spatial Studio, specialises in detail-driven, mid- to high-end interiors that elevate the atmosphere of each client’s space. The studio designs both interiors and bespoke furniture, primarily for residential homes, with select commercial projects. While most clients are based in Auckland, the studio also works with clients in Queenstown, Nelson, and internationally. Spatial Studio is dedicated to exceeding client expectations from concept through to final delivery. Established in 2018 and led by award-winning creative director Kristen Basra, the team – bringing together talent from New Zealand, Australia, and Holland – crafts sophisticated, refined interiors that beautifully reflect each client’s personality or brand. Paying meticulous attention to detail, the team delivers complete interior solutions – from custom kitchens and bathrooms to furniture, finishes, cabinetry design, colour palettes, and more. “We offer a complete end-to-end design service, managing every aspect of your new build or renovation – from concept through to completion,” Kristen explains. “We have a good discussion with each client to understand their way of living and make sure the design works for their lifestyle and family. It’s very personal for each project,” she says. “We’re finding that many people want a calm and welcoming home to return to, with neutral colours and natural textures. Some clients also like to create a mood in certain spaces – especially guest bathrooms and dark media rooms.” What sets Spatial Studio apart is their organisation, process, attention to detail, and eye for high-quality design. “We’re very organised. Before the design phase, we provide a creative direction mood board with photos. We also produce detailed 2D construction drawings and a comprehensive finishes schedule for each part of the design. For every aspect of the interior, we present two to three options, including both light and dark finishes. We also create detailed 3D drawings for clients,” Kristen explains. “We have a highly skilled team that consistently delivers at a very high standard and brings extensive experience to every project. Our key focus is maintaining full communication with clients throughout the entire process.” A recent highlight for Spatial Studio was Aspen, a multi-million-dollar home renovation in Queenstown, where the team collaborated closely with the clients, and architects Mason & Wales. The Aspen project encompassed a complete interior redesign and spatial reconfiguration, including the removal of walls to create a more open layout and the installation of all-new exterior joinery. The refreshed design introduced a double-island concept in the kitchen, seamlessly connecting the living and dining areas. Extensive glass windows were added to maximise the breathtaking lakeside views, while the home’s layout was designed to function as a multi-generational residence capable of hosting two large families. Current Spatial Studio projects total over 80 at different stages, with a mix of new builds and renovations – ranging from full houses, to just kitchens or bathrooms. “Most of our work is referrals. We don’t need to advertise,” Kristen says. Over the past four years, Spatial Studio has been selling its 2020 and 2021 furniture collections through its website. Customers have included an interior designer in Las Vegas, a yacht outfitter in Bali, and a hotel in Singapore.
