116 | BUILDING Principle Homes T T Hugh de Lacy Boutique builder delivering quality “We chose the name Principle Homes to reflect the principled approach we take to acquiring land and delivering houses on it,” A gap in the market for quality-built homes, with an emphasis on design flexibility, is what prompted George Evangelidakis to launch his Principle Homes company in Auckland in 2003, and the latest in a succession of quality homes it has since produced reflects that focus. “We’re a boutique residential construction company servicing owner-occupiers and/or investor interests in the quality-built market, and we take pride in the flexibility we have in our expertise, our local knowledge and our personalised service,” George says. “All that is reflected in the latest new home we’ve brought to the market, which happens to be a large one, but our developments range from single family homes to two- or three-bay unit developments and are aimed at helping property owners in realising the value of their land.” Since 2008 he has concentrated on Auckland’s Eastern Suburbs, managing the whole process from concept and design to completion and sale.” “It’s a system that has worked very well for us over the past 22 years, giving us full control over the process and ensuring that the clients get the homes they want.” Excelling at the finer details Complex Construction T T Sue Russell Te Kowhai, a stone’s throw from Hamilton’s western suburbs, is enjoying a growth spurt, and it is where Complex Construction is based, with Liam Burgess and two other experienced builders making up the core of the business. Liam has been building for nearly 14 years and has been running the company for almost four years now. “I always wanted to do my own thing, and just needed the grounding years of experience before setting up on my own. Finding two other great builders to have in the team has been significant, and we also have a couple of young work-experience people on board, so I’m in a good situation for a relatively new business,” Liam says.. He is proud of the fact that the team is capable of working on all phases of a build, from the concrete up. “When we do our own private work, we do every part of the build, so our customers get great value and efficiency from us.” Liam describes business of late as “quite steady”. “At the start of 2025, we had contractors on working with us, given the amount of work we had on board at that time. We’re now needing to get some more people, and my plan is to keep growing so we can split well into separate teams on jobs.” The bulk of private work, Liam says, comes from word of mouth, which is very satisfying. Towards the end of 2025, the team had four jobs on the go, with two nearly winding up. They had just started a labour-only job and had three houses of theirr own in the New Year to get stuck into, Liam says. Given Complex Construction’s current size, Liam says he is actively on the tools. Work on the business takes place after a day of swinging a hammer and ensuring the team has everything they need on hand. “I really enjoy doing pricing, and work hard to deliver clients the best-possible value and efficiency in their build. Our subtrades certainly add to the overall quality of our work that we strive to produce. They are a key part in creating a smooth-flowing, high-quality product.” Liam says building reallly runs in the family, with a great-grandfather and grandfather that were both builders, while his Dad works in the sheet metalwork sector. The current project under construction is a 647sqm house on a 966sqm site at 29 Codrington Crescent, Mission Bay, in Auckland’s Eastern Suburbs, featuring five bedrooms, three separate living spaces and two outdoor living areas spread over three levels and serviced by a lift. There’s a dream garage area, enough for six cars and a workplace. To round things off it’s fully fenced and gated with easy-to-maintain landscaping, and a 10m by 4m swimming pool surrounded by large paving and incorporating a spa bath. The exterior features wide-span tray roofing with cedar shiplap weatherboarding on the walls, double-glazed thermally broken joinery, solar batteries and panels, and an automatic gate on the concrete driveway. And for anyone considering getting involved in building as a career, Liam has some good advice. “You have to show you’re passionate about building, which means approaching a building site, even while you’re still at school, to say you’d be keen to have the opportunity to work on a site, even unpaid. This sort of attitude really makes a difference when the time comes to actually apply for work. That’s how I did it.” Construction of a new Da-Silva Builders show home in the north end of Hamilton, in Rototuna was another highlight for the team in 2025. “This job was a high-end, two-storey 290-square-metre, four-bedroom home, and it’s the finer details in these top-quality projects that Complex Construction really excels at,” says Liam. The home has a high-stud, open-plan layout that gives a real sense of presence, and the combination of vertical oblique cladding and painted bricks really make the project stand out. Running a successful building company is a case, Liam says, of always being open to opportunities that come around, because word gets out that your work standard is very good, you are reliable and hard-working. “These are the qualities people look for in their builder. I’m just 29 years of age and I’ve achieved what I have because I’ve put myself out there and worked hard. I’m looking forward to a good start to the year and plenty of opportunities ahead.” Ross Cordiner Ltd Painter & Decorator | Interior & Exterior 027 226 4525 ross.cordiner@xtra.co.nz Ross Cordiner | Owner/Director Quality workmanship with great service for 25+ years. 021822518 info@aceelectricalwaikato.com Proudly supporting Complex Construction Ltd Share your vision with us and we will turn it into reality.
