| 123 Kings College Toi Manawa includes a specialist theatre, dedicated music classrooms, a recording studio, dance studio, music practice rooms and an “incredibly sophisticated” orchestra room. COMMUNITY “There’s been a heap of really clever thinking going into the design and elements used, with a view to building cleverly and building efficiently,” Emma says. Kings College is located in Ōtāhuhu, South Auckland, and as Emma explains, bridging the cultural gap between private school and the community can present challenges. Toi Manawa, has created a space that builds this bridge. “With this facility we have been able to have different groups coming in to use it. We’re certainly encouraging this and the response from the community has been very positive.” The 250-seat Flanagan Theatre, based on Auckland’s Q Theatre design, will be home to a full suite of performance forms. “At Kings College we offer NCEA and Cambridge drama classes and this space is perfect for an array of performance types. As for the orchestra here, when I started we had 17 in the orchestra, we now have 85.” Emma speaks highly of Toi Manawa’s thoughtful design, and the input of Marshall Day acoustics. “Their consultation process and different options they gave us to consider were excellent. They are experts in their field and worked in very well with our budget and needs.” In all, 22 itinerants come in and out of the building regularly, providing students with a kaleidoscope of choices in terms of musical instruments to learn. “We certainly know we have been blessed with this beautiful building, very much sitting at home among the historic buildings of the school,” Emma says. “We’re very proud of what has been achieved and what Toi Manawa will give to students and means to the school and wider community.” NZ 09 580 4036 027 253 7040 patrick@sunbuild.co.nz Joint Sealants & Waterproofing Cementitious & Epoxy Grouting Passive Fire Stopping Concrete Repair Fire Rating to Structural Steel
