Kariaotahi Surf Club “Now we’ve got a facility that reflects who we are and what we do, and it’s really bringing the club back together.” COMMUNITY After more than a decade of planning, fundraising and construction, Surf Life Saving Kariaotahi has officially opened its new purpose-built clubrooms, giving the west coast beach community a modern facility to support lifesaving and training activities. The grand opening over November 1st and 2nd drew a strong turnout, with sunny weather adding to the celebratory atmosphere. Club president Bradley Walters described the weekend as “fantastic,” noting both the formal ceremonies and the public open day highlighted the community’s long-standing support. “It still feels a little surreal,” Brad says. “I’ve been involved with the club for 20 seasons, and the past five has been tough. We were working from a building that should have been condemned and then a set-up of shipping containers while the new club was being built. “Now we’ve got a facility that reflects who we are and what we do, and it’s really bringing the club back together.” The new building is a structure designed to withstand the harsh coastal environment. Engineering for wind loads and beachside foundations made construction complex, contributing to the long timeline from initial plans in 2010 to completion in late 2025. Pukekohe Builders led the project, with civil works starting in May 2024 and the demolition of the old clubhouse marking the symbolic end of an era. Structural steel, concrete foundations, and state-of-the-art services were carefully installed over the following months. The facility features a large training room, lounge, accessible storage areas, and accommodation for lifeguards. A purpose-built communications room includes upgraded internet, radio systems, GPS tracking, and new technology to ensure safety on the beach. Brad says these improvements allow the club to run internal training programmes and develop junior and intermediate lifeguards efficiently. The club has also focused on expanding its community reach. Kariaotahi Beach sees visitors from as far as Papatoetoe, and Brad highlights the diverse range of users, from swimmers and horse riders to four-wheel drivers and hang gliders. “We provide guidance on beach rules and respect for all users. Our role isn’t just patrols; it’s about making the beach safe and enjoyable for everyone.” Surf Life Saving Kariaotahi operates entirely through volunteers and provides Surf Rescue Patrols during summer months and operates a 24/7/365 Emergency Search and Rescue Squad. The club’s preventative efforts have ramped up in recent seasons, with incidents prevented more than doubling from 803 in 2023/24 to 1682 in 2024/25. Community fundraising played a critical role in bringing this project to life. The ongoing ‘Buy a Brick’ campaign allows supporters to have their names inscribed on the building. Brad says the campaign has been a visible reminder of local backing. “People can see their bricks now, so that’s really cool. It’s part of building a family for the club and growing our membership.” The opening also sparked renewed interest among former members, with several rejoining, as well as a new group of lifeguards now being trained out of the new facility. Brad says the club will keep this momentum going by hosting regular events and training sessions, and attending local sporting activities. With its modern facility now in place, Surf Life Saving Kariaotahi is well-positioned to continue its mission: preventing loss of life and ensuring safety in and around the aquatic environment, while remaining a valued hub for the local community.
