Tuakau Hotel: 150 years Anniversary REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT The 150th anniversary of Tuakau Hotel was celebrated in July last year, following completion of the first stage of a multi-million dollar restoration project. Located in North Waikato, Tuakau Hotel first received its license in 1875, making it one of the region’s oldest establishments. It was opened by John Collins whose great-grandson, Rob Collins, was present for the hotel’s anniversary celebration. Its original location was near the Waikato River. However, in December 1880 it was relocated to its present site on George Street, closer to the then new railway station. An iconic timber building with a street-facing verandah, it has stood as a central community hub throughout the history of Tuakau, a township that developed from a rural service centre to a thriving community. In recent years, under the ownership of Neil Young and Dee Bond, Tuakau Hotel received a significant facelift, with the $5 million award-winning restoration transforming it into a modern, family-friendly community venue. The restored building now offers accommodation, conference facilities, and dining options, while preserving its original charm. Plans to invest an additional $5 million will add a third storey and result in the hotel doubling in size to accommodate growing demand for heritage experiences in rural areas, transforming the building into a world-class heritage hotel. It is hoped construction will start in 2027. The sesquicentennial, held on July 13, brought together former staff, local families, descendants of early settlers, and the wider community for a night of reflection, reconnection, and pride. The event commemorated the rich history of the hotel, from its beginnings as a country inn to the boutique accommodation and event venue it is today. Attendees enjoyed a visual journey through the hotel’s past, a taste of history with a recreated dessert from 1901, and stories that spanned generations. “This place… it holds so many stories,” hotel director Dee says. “It’s seen generations walk through its doors: locals, travellers, families, friends. “This celebration is more than just a milestone; it’s a moment to pause, look around, and appreciate the people who’ve helped carry this place through the decades.” Co-director Neil Young says the hotel has lived through world wars, economic crashes, and pandemics, “and it’s still standing strong”. “That’s not just about bricks and mortar; it’s about continuity, resilience, and bringing people together through time.” The celebration was not only a nod to the past but also a celebration of the people — from hardworking team members to loyal locals — who have shaped its legacy. Among the evening’s highlights was the cake cutting, led by 100-year-old Rev David Barnes, one of Tuakau’s oldest residents, custodian of the Tuakau Memorial Hall for more than 60 years and a respected community figure known for his long-standing involvement in countless community initiatives.
