REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT T T to page 32 Tauranga Community Housing Trust (TCHT) is moving ahead with a new strategic partnership formed to deliver a landmark community housing development aimed at meeting the urgent demand for affordable, accessible homes in the Bay of Plenty. The project, a partnership with the Bay of Plenty Housing Equity Fund, will see Mike Greer Commercial deliver 20 apartments specifically designed for people aged over 55, or those living with chronic health conditions. THCT general manager Jacqui Ryan says the development will support residents to live independently for as long as they can, with apartments built to LifeMark Level 4 standards – an industry accreditation for safe, accessible, and sustainable housing design. “We have chosen this accreditation as it is specifically aimed at helping people to age in place,” Jacqui explains. She says there are local people in desperate and chronic need, of affordable housing. “This joint venture is the only way this project could go ahead. Without it, we would likely have been limited to building 12 single-level units with fewer technical specifications, so we wouldn’t have been able to house as many people, or deliver the same level of benefit.” The apartments are being funded through the partnership with the Bay of Plenty Housing Equity Fund, an innovative initiative designed to address the region’s housing shortage while delivering a commercial return to investors.
