REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Titan Marine Engineering Operating from Auckland’s Wynyard Quarter, Titan Marine Engineering has been providing high-level marine and industrial engineering services to New Zealand and international clients since 1993. Titan’s shipyard is a hub for innovation and excellence in marine engineering, which, along with its commitment to superior service, has cemented its position as an industry leader. Operations manager Todd Wilson says every project the company undertakes, whether a major survey, full refit or a quick-turnaround repair, receives the same level of care and attention, with all aspects of a project able to be handled on-site at its fully equipped shipyard. The shipyard can handle vessels of various sizes, including having 1500 tonne haul-out facilities, providing custom fabrication and project management, heavy machining, overhauls, refits, and general engineering. Locally, its many commercial customers include the Ports of Auckland. One of Ports of Auckland’s workhorses, the 22 metre, 338 gross tonne Waipapa is one of its three primary tugs that escorts cargo ships in and out of the ports. When one of the tugs is out of commission, a fast turnaround is crucial, Todd says. “That meant that when the Waipapa came into our slipway for her five-yearly survey we faced an immense time pressure. We needed to maintain our usual high standards, but also get her back to work as soon as possible. “We began with heavy preparation, getting all the parts and machines ready before the Waipapa even arrived. Our apprentices and engineers understood the urgency and were ready to work the long hours needed to get the job done.” In addition to the usual survey inspections and repairs, Titan Marine Engineering replaced the tires on the fender to solve their corrosion problems. The final step was to give the Waipapa a full paint refurbishment. Another vessel surveyed was The Nivaga III, a 60.5 metre passenger/cargo ship from Tuvalu that mainly operates between the islands, its key function being to transport medical patients. The Nivaga III came to Titan after its normal five-yearly survey was delayed due to the Covid pandemic which meant there was an inevitable increase in maintenance and defects. “Our large slipway and full-service facilities meant we could repair every facet of the vessel in-house and nothing needed to be sent away.
