VergeNZ T T Karen Phelps “We love the versatility of the system we use. It’s a bit like Meccano – once you get your head into it you can use it to solve many height-access issues in various ways.” CONTRACTING VergeNZ is celebrating a major milestone in 2026 as it marks 10 years since the Tauranga-based scaffolding company first began trading. Founded in 2016 by three friends, Joel Warren, Brent Howard and Darryl Matthews, all with hands-on construction experience, the business has grown from a small local operation into a multi-branch scaffolding provider servicing Tauranga, Taupō, Rotorua and the wider Waikato region. “It means a lot to reach 10 years, because many companies just don’t get to this stage,” says Joel. “The company has developed a lot over the years but still kept the same culture, which we are very proud of. It’s a very flat business structure – everyone at VergeNZ is highly valued, no matter their role or position.” That culture, grounded in transparency, communication and genuinely looking after customers, has helped it grow, even through the recession. “Our customers seek good service,” explains Joel. “By making things easy for our customers it’s helped their business grow through tough times too.” This commitment to reliability has resulted in national recognition. In the NZ Most Trusted Business Awards 2025, VergeNZ was named Most Trusted Scaffolding Company in both the Waikato and Taupō regions, and runner-up in the Bay of Plenty. “The fundamental of our business is honesty, which translates in this case to ‘most trusted’. So we are very proud to receive these accolades,” says Joel. As a full-service provider of scaffolding and edge protection, the company prides itself on being responsive, hassle-free and results-focused. It offers installation and hire for both residential and commercial projects ensuring sites are safe, efficient and ready for other trades to proceed without delay. Communication, particularly during quoting, remains one of its hallmarks. The team works closely with builders to ensure every detail is understood upfront, reducing variations and saving clients both time and money.“Our service is very much focused around the customer and what they want as an outcome,” explains Joel. “We always look at how we can make things easier and more efficient for them. It’s a win– win.” A key part of this efficiency is the company’s use of the INTAKS system, a lightweight, New Zealand-designed modular scaffold and edge-protection solution. Joel himself was at INTAKS when it first went to the market and played a significant role in its development. His experience gives VergeNZ a unique advantage in tailoring smart, site-specific access systems. “We love the versatility of the system we use. It’s a bit like Meccano – once you get your head into it you can use it to solve many height-access issues in various ways,” says Joel. VergeNZ’s 34-strong team sits at the centre of its success. The company invests heavily in training, putting many staff through apprenticeships and supporting continued professional development. He says the aim of VergeNZ is for continued expansion. “With growth comes the need to make things more streamlined in the business so that the systems in place are scalable, but also not rigid, as different areas work differently, and getting systems in place that have flexibility is critical. A good service business listens to its customers’ needs and adapts to suit.”
