Initially based in the Canterbury region and operating under the name of Spartan South Ltd, the company lent its expertise to complex civil projects assisting with the rebuild following the Christchurch earthquakes. Upon returning to the Waikato, the company rebranded as Phoenix Civil and has gone from strength to strength, becoming involved in a number of major projects in the subdivision, three waters and general infrastructure markets. One of Phoenix Civil’s most recent projects is Northgate Business Park on the outskirts of Hamilton, which included over 400,000 cubic metres of complex earthworks and over 2.5 kilometers of drainage up to 1500 diameter across the 42-hectare site. A steady organic approach to growth reflects the company’s insistence on recruiting only the best of the best regardless of position in the business, and a strong focus on cultural fit within the team. “We are all about having good people on the ground,” says Steve McPherson, Phoenix Civils’ Contracts and Commercial Manager. “Although skill and experience is important we look foremost for people with integrity, the right attitude and who are willing to learn. We work in a hazardous environment so having people around who you can trust is critical. We pride ourselves on our family culture and providing quality workmanship and a service our clients can trust.” The team of 35 includes Steve and General Manager Inniss Anderson, with a number of skilled project managers, site engineers, surveyors and a range of experienced machine operators and drainlayers. Phoenix Civil’s diverse range of services includes earthworks; drainage; water and wastewater systems across the private, government and local government sectors. Phoenix Civil’s experience and skill sees them trusted with a number of high-profile projects. Based in Cambridge, Phoenix Civil primarily operates in the greater Waikato/Bay of Plenty and Auckland regions but is open to providing its expertise in other areas throughout NZ. While Steve has only been part of the business for the last three months, he says he has been drawn by the company’s culture and number 8-wire mentality. “Everybody is involved on the ground level and no job is above anyone including Inniss our General Manager. He is on the ground running projects himself, which is a testament to how we operate. It is a real ‘get in and do it’ attitude. When speaking to clients we work with and those we have worked for in the past the feedback is always positive, our ability to solve problems, communicate and a practical approach to projects is always a common theme.” “First and foremost, we like to partner with our clients, sharing in their passion for the project and getting a real feel for the bigger picture and what they are trying to achieve. Being open and transparent and operating with a no surprises policy helps ensure that any potential issues are stamped out before they become a problem.” Skill & experience
