We have the experience of building over four thousand apartments from Queenstown to Cable Bay in the Far North.” T T to page 28 C lad in stone and possessing command- ing views of Auckland harbour, the nearly completed Jervois & Lawrence apartment building in Auckland’s leafy Herne Bay suburb carries all the hallmarks of a sub- stantial building that reflects timeless quality and permanence. Beautifully designed by Auckland architects Leuschke Group Ltd, one of the country’s fore- most architectural practices, the multi-level building takes pride of place on the corner of Jervois Road and Lawrence Street and boasts impressive views of the upper harbour, down to the Harbour Bridge and beyond to North Head. While harbour views are to the north, the southern views are also extensive; over Pon- sonby Valley, up to New North Road, over to Mount Eden and beyond to provide expansive views across to the southern part of the inner city. “Leuschke Group was asked to submit a fee in April 2017, shortly after the client bought the property,” says Colin Leuschke. “There was a selection process for the architect and we were lucky enough to win that process based upon reputation and ability to deliver. We have the experience of building over four thousand apartments from Queenstown to Cable Bay in the Far North. Bryan Perrow of Perrow Consulting Group was already engaged as the project manager and we worked very well with him throughout the project.” With Herne Bay’s affluent, older demo - graphic, the architectural team considered the apartment’s purchasers might be living nearby. With children gone a more managea- ble and contemporary apartment living would be preferred. To achieve a building of timeless quality Leuschke Group’s insight was to use stone cladding and other low maintenance perma- nent materials. “Stone is ancient and travels through time. It reflects quality and timelessness — very much like the cherrywood dashboard which used to be found on quality vehicles like Bentley and Jaguar. “So we’ve used Travertine split face and polished face stone for the structural grid of the building, offset by Trespa paneling, glass and aluminum” Positioned on a very prominent position, the sizes of the 28 apartments vary dramati- cally but a key design issue was that, north to south, the site was too deep for one apart- ment alone.
