DO OUR READERS KNOW YOU EXIST? I n an age where carbon emissions and the use of chemicals and water by processing plants fall increasingly under the interna- tional microscope, support is sought from specialist chemical and process engineers offering full turn-key capability. Delivering a diverse range of solutions including hygienic processes; clean-in-place systems; water treatment systems; hazardous substances and new organisms; and equip- ment installation, Auckland based Techo Ltd is at the forefront of the new age. Heading a highly qualified and experienced team of process engineers, project and construction managers are directors Warren Boyes and Frank Wallwork. From concept, design, installation, commis- sioning, training and handover of a fully oper- ational system Techo’s niche is working with factories merging new technology, processes and systems with older legacy assets. “Our projects have a guaranteed timeline, performance and cost, “ says Warren. “When a client approaches us we look at what the most ideal system would be to achieve the best outcome. We then look at their existing system and processes. ‘Given the reality of constraints that might exist around space, capital expenditure or delivery time, the solution typically sits some- where in between’” With a head office in Ellerslie and a ware- house in Hamilton, Techo has the capability to undertake projects from Whangarei to In- vercargill. “We send our project, construction and process engineers around the country to manage the projects but our preference is always to utilise local construction companies to deliver the jobs. “Dairy is the primary industry we work with but we also undertake projects in the FMCG industries, meat processing and fruit cool stores. We also do a little bit of work with the heavy industrial industry as well.” Warren recalls one of last year’s projects where a client’s effluent stream was outside its pH requirements for resource consent. “We had to design and install a pH adjust- ment system dosing in chemicals to get that within specification. A lot of our work this year is on water efficiency work — using less water more efficiently and then potentially re-using that water through filtration. ‘The knock on benefit of every litre less used is a litre less that has to be processed at the back-end in terms of wastewater treatment.” Helping clients reduce their carbon emis- sions has become a major focus for Techo. Last year Warren and his team worked with a South Island dairy processing company to reconfigure large milk pasteurisers, achieving maximum heat recovery, saving close to 5000 tonnes of carbon each year. “There’s also a big push on the sustainability side and most businesses will have targets of a certain reduction in their carbon emissions year by year. Chemical usage is the other one. How can we better utilise chemicals so that there are less of them in our wastewater.” Reflecting on the success of Techo over the last 22 years of its operation, Warren says much of that comes down to developing a comprehensive understanding of each client’s needs and delivering quality projects that meet those needs.
