TDM – getting the job done Being able to resource most of the works in-house was a signi icant advantage for TDM Construction in completing the civil works for Patumahoe Hill. With unforeseen delays, including Covid-19, the project meant that in a tight construction market resourcing became critical. Company general manager Rob Baxter says that TDM Construction’s close relationships with local contractors also helped pull in the resources necessary to get the job done along with stringent company wide planning across all projects to have the lexibility to react to delays. “For example we subcontracted the retaining walls to multiple contractors working simultaneously, which really sped up with important aspect of the project,” he says. TDM Construction has been working for client Searle Group for a number of years and previously completed projects include Fletcher Lane in Patumahoe and Calcutta Road on Pukekohe Hill. TDM Construction takes projects from a green ields site to ready to construct houses on. On Patumahoe Hill this involved completing earthworks, drainage, stormwater and services such as power and phone as well as roading and concreting. Rob says as three existing roads – Mauku Road, Kingseat Road and Day Road - border the site this presented challenges in terms of tra ic management as well as connecting services to the public system. TDM Construction was started in 2004 by brothers Todd, Dean and Marc Black. The brothers have come from a family involved in the construction industry. Todd and Dean are quali ied drain layers while Todd also has a quali ication in civil engineering and experience in land development. Company transport and maintenance manager Marc is a quali ied mechanic. All the skills of the brothers add to the mix of the successful business they operate. Todd is responsible for the overall running of the company while Dean oversees major infrastructure drainage and Marc takes charge of the company workshop and leet. Located between Hamilton and Auckland, TDM Construction services this region. Civil infrastructure drainage contracting for clients such as Fulton Hogan and McConnell Dowell and drainage and full civil packages for Ryman Healthcare and other high-density builders forms the mainstay of work. Subdivision work makes up the remainder of the mix and TDM Construction takes pride in the fact that most services can be completed by the in-house team of around 65 sta resulting in greater control over quality and timing of projects. Continual investment in the latest plant is an important aspect of the business and ensuring a high quality end result for clients on time and on budget. Having the right systems and management practices in place is the inal part of the successful formula. The lynchpins of this are Rob, who is a quali ied drain layer and has a management degree (Bachelor of Commerce), together with the boys’ mother Annette, an accountant by trade who ensures that the inancial side of the business is kept in check. Rob says that the company has a busy workload and current projects include ive Ryman Healthcare retirement villages in Auckland and Hamilton, a project at Horotiu for Ports of Auckland, a wastewater separation project at St Mary’s Bay for McConnell Dowell, State Highway 20b (one of the main routes into Auckland Airport) and an 800-lot subdivision at Ramarama for Classic Developments.
