T T to page 93 BUILDING F amily connection is a strong thread that flows through Auckland-based residential development business Jalcon Homes. Five family members, from a total of 60 em- ployees are involved in the company. Founder Lindsay Aitken’s youngest son Ben joined the firm as a qualified Quantity Survey- or and has recently taken on project manage, while older brother Jacob has taken up the role of Business Development Manager. Lindsay’s sister Denise Gale leads the sales team while another sister Julie runs the award winning interior design service. “It gives us a real sense of accountability to know our name and reputation are on the line with each and every project we undertake,” says Denise. “That gives our clients an understanding of our commitment to consistently perform at the highest standards.” Even Lindsay’s mum June has a part to play, personally preparing hand-over gift baskets with a hand written thank you card. The company’s main office is located on Ormiston Road, East Tamaki with a satellite office in Hobsonville, a precinct where Jalcon Homes has built a number of dwellings. Reflecting the standard of craftsmanship and artistry in design that Jalcon Homes has become synonymous with is the company’s showhome at 11 Sunderland Avenue. The home features leading edge technolo- gies with appliances that can be activated by Wifi through a centrally controlled phone app. Recycled rainwater runs through toilets and garden taps while the outside space has been carefully landscaped to reflect the chang- ing seasons. Inside herringbone floors and beautiful bench-tops reflect Jalcon Home’s commitment to quality and finish. Denise first discovered a passion for design having worked initially in administrative support. “When I did an interior design course I realised just how much I enjoyed this and that I have a natural bent toward design, so it was great to be able to take on this passion in the family business,” Denise explains. With her sister Julie ‘Duo Design’ was es- tablished to work with Jalcon Homes, further adding value to the services the company offers its clients. At Hobsonville Point, a precinct Denise describes, as a mini-city in its own right. All 79 homes in the initial offering at Hobsonville Point have been sold. “We’re really at the forefront there with so much interest from clients wishing to build and live at Hobsonville Point. We have a ded- icated colour consultant and a construction team dedicated specifically to this area.” Over time there’s been a shift away from private design and build to the company un- dertaking their own projects for developers. “We just really wanted to move in this direc- tion and Since COVID Denise says demand for their own builds has been enormous.” Today Jalcon Homes is involved in building stand-alone homes, terraced housing, and multi-unit apartments in many areas through- out Auckland. At Airfields Quarter Two - Hobsonville Point’s historic airfield, just across the road from the coastal walkway at Catalina Bay - Jalcon Homes has two and three bedroom homes for sale, while at Owairaka, between Mt Albert and Mt Roskill it has built three and four bedroom homes. At Huapai Triangle, a greenfields develop- ment at Kumeu, Jalcon Homes has construct- ed two-level apartment Denise in April says the shift in focus for the company away from design and build, to undertaking their own large-scale residential projects has been exciting. “I know Lindsay has made the right decision to shift the focus for our company to large- scale projects. “We haven’t looked back since moving in this direction but it does mean we need to always be thinking about how best to deliver on this vision,” Denise says. “I know Lindsay has made the right decision to shift the focus for our company to large-scale projects.
