There is also a couple of project managers and administration staff permanently in the office.” M ulti-award winning Jones Builders’ decision to move from leased prem- ises to its own purpose built offices in Tauranga’s premier Tauriko Business Estate is a reflection of the building company’s signifi- cant growth in recent years. The 700sqm concrete tilt panel building will consist of a reception area, boardroom and large storage area on the ground floor with offices on a mezzanine. Managing Director Brad Jones says while his team doesn’t normally undertake commercial projects, the new premises was more like a large residential property and he wanted the building to showcase his team’s craftsman- ship. “The building was designed by ADG Archi- tectural Design Group from Tauranga. We’ve included a few features like a cedar spine wall that runs internally displaying different cedar profiles and we’ve used some cedar cladding on the side of the building to provide some nice detail.” With concrete panels now up and the floor poured, the internal steel structure is current- ly in progress. Brad and his team hope to move into their new home at the end of July, just shy of the business’s tenth birthday. Leaving school at sixteen to complete his apprenticeship, Brad pursued his passion by contracting to other builders shortly after completing his time and quickly became involved in his own projects including bath- rooms, decks, fences and small renovation projects. “A year later we got our first apprentice and full scale building project and it has just grown and grown from there. “We now have a team of eleven builders including two apprentices, along with builders that contract to us. There is also a couple of project managers and administration staff permanently in the office.” While the majority of projects are based around the Tauranga area, Jones Builders operate throughout the Bay of Plenty region undertaking a diverse range of residential projects including house and land, design and build packages right through to large architec- tural projects. “Some of the larger architectural projects would involve a year or more work,” says Brad. “We would usually have about six builds in progress at any one time. My role now is more project managing, meeting clients and pricing. A quaint and authentic French cottage designed and constructed to blend in with an existing home on the same site exempli- fies the diversity and craftsmanship of Jones Builders’ projects. Being a Licensed Building Practitioner and understanding the building process has enabled Brad to engage constructively with his clients. “I think also that the clients really appreciate being able to deal directly with the owner. We care about each project and each project is pretty special to us. “We are a family owned and operated busi- ness and I think that means we are closer to our team and to our customers.” While modest about what has underpinned his company’s success, Brad says his team has a large part to play in developing a reputation throughout Tauranga for the craftsmanship of very high quality homes.
