| 3 “I love the fact that we are a small Kiwi owned organisation, which means that there is a great feeling of whanau within our culture.” Kiwi health insurer in good heart Karen Phelps Accuro now has over 33,000 members in New Zealand. BUSINESS Accuro to page 4 In its 50th year of operation, New Zealand owned private health insurer Accuro continues to grow, says CEO Lance Walker. The organisation now has over 33,000 members including increasing interest from business owners wanting to offer insurance to their staff. “One thing we have seen is that health insurance is becoming one of the most sought after benefits by employees,” says Lance. “When choosing a job or accepting a position, the mere fact you have health insurance could determine whether you attract and retain the best talent. “In New Zealand, eight out of ten employees rate medical insurance as an important company benefit, and a recent Seek survey identified it as the number one perk for employees. “So in the current tight labour market offering this to staff could be one way to become a preferred employer,” says Lance. There are also other significant benefits. Lance says safeguarding a workplace against the impact of absences due to illness increases productivity and getting health insurance for staff is more affordable than many people think. “In many cases subsidised health insurance is less than 1% of the total salary bill,” he says. “Any money you pay for premiums is offset by an increase in productivity – healthy staff are three times more productive than unhealthy ones. “An absent employee also typically costs an employer $600 to $1,000 a year due to sickness and staff with health insurance can return to work up to three months faster than those without access to private treatment.” With the Covid pandemic predicted to put on-going strain on the hospital system, causing issues such as non-urgent surgery wait times to increase, Lance says private insurance can mean people who require assistance can get it faster. Its high level of service and innovative products are what has led to 50 years of success for Accuro, which recently celebrated this milestone anniversary. Accuro started in 1971 as the Hospital Services Welfare Society providing health insurance exclusively to hospital staff. In 2007 it opened the doors for every New Zealander to take out individual cover and rebranded to Accuro - Latin for ‘taking care’. “I love the fact that we are a small kiwi owned organisation, which means that there We congratulate the team at Accuro Health Insurance on their anniversary We are proud to work with Accuro, which is New Zealand’s best little health insurer www.mahonyhorner.co.nz Mahony Horner Lawyers - for Trusted Legal Advice ROS EW I L L CONS U LT I NG L I M I T E D +64 274 666 686 comply@rosewillconsulting.co.nz LICENSING | COMPLIANCE | AML AUDITS | TRAINING is a great feeling of whanau within our culture. Get in touch to see how we can help your business get smarter too! 04 499 2210 info@getsmartglobal.com www.getsmartglobal.com Importantly, Accuro is a not-for-profit, cooperative society, which Lance says is another huge advantage for members. “This is a great business structure for an insurer. It means that our customers, our members, are genuinely our most important stakeholders. “We have no external shareholder that we have to satisfy. We are here to deliver value to our members, which goes to our purpose: to help our members get well and stay well.” Examples of this in practice over the years abound. In 2007, it was the first insurer in New Zealand to introduce non-smoker and healthy weight discounts. Recognising the importance of digital channels, it was the first health insurer in New Zealand to offer online quotes and applications, and in 2017 its online underwriting platform (HUGO) made Accuro the first health insurer in the world to offer instant online cover. HUGO won Accuro the Innovation of the Year award from the Australian and New Zealand Insurance Industry. Lance says Accuro has always focused on the wellness of its members and in 2018 it launched Active Benefits, a range of free initiatives designed to support and enhance its members’ health and wellbeing. Benefits include Best Doctors, giving members access to a world of medical experts and second opinions; the online Health Hub, which provides free health support and resources to members; and a new Mental Health tool with quick and easy access to mental health diagnosis and professional support. More recently it has partnered with leading decision science platform Montoux, on a pilot programme to identify early interventions that could help its members avoid major invasive surgeries, and to celebrate its 50th year has become the principal supporter of the Life Flight Trust Air Ambulance service. Lance says that over 50 years Accuro has always remained true to its core reason for its existence: delivering value and great outcomes back to its members. This year it has embarked on a major technology project – a rebuild of its core policy administration system, which Lance says will ensure that Accuro can continue to innovate and evolve in the future delivering new products and services and improved customer experience. • 85% majority of calls (first call resolution) are resolved by our Service Desk • We are 100% client focused and always striving to improve our service in any way we can P 04 471 0421 www.mercuryit.co.nz Offices in Christchurch, Wellington, Hamilton, Tauranga, Melbourne, and Auckland Find our free audit here: mercuryit.co.nz/free-it-audit An IT company that works with you, Not against you.

6 | BUSINESS NZ International Business Awards - Global Metal Solutions Award a proud achievement for team Richard Loader Craig Tuhoro: “Having a Māori business of this level in the exporting side is quite an achievement.” A whānau-owned and led business with its roots in Ngāti Maniapoto, Global Metal Solutions (GMS) provides premium metal recycling services in Aotearoa and the Pacific to help ensure a safer, cleaner future for planet earth. Founded by Craig Tuhoro in 2010, GMS’s endeavours were aptly acknowledged at the 2021 New Zealand International Business Awards, winning He kai kei aku ringa for Māori Excellence in Export. The New Zealand International Business Awards are the country’s most prestigious awards for export businesses, celebrating the success of New Zealand businesses on the world stage and recognising excellence and innovative practice. The awards have been supported by New Zealand Trade and Enterprise – Te Taurapa Tūhono and its predecessor organisations since 1964. The judges were impressed by Global Metal Solutions’ authenticity as a Māori owned and operated business, with tikanga Māori integral to its operations and driving its unique advantage in an industry built on relationships. Craig says while he typically flies under the radar, he was encouraged to enter GMS into the awards by those around him including New Zealand Trade and Enterprise. “I’m not really looking for award recognition, I’m just looking to keep my head down, keep driving forward and paying my people. But some of the team got quite excited so we got involved, put the entry in and the rest is history. “Going to the award ceremony I was a little shocked to see the Prime Minister opening it, and I got a bit nervous. When we won the award it was a very rewarding feeling for the team, the whānau and me. To be acknowledged was an important moment for us all. We have a very good crew with some very lovely people — we are very fortunate.” Craig suspects the judging panel were surprised at the depth of the company’s international knowledge and capability, and the scope in which the industry is covered. “We consider ourselves to be an option to some of the biggest corporates in the world for people to work with. The metals market is divided between those that serve the public, those who serve trade and industry and those who serve the exporters. Having a Māori business of this level in the exporting side is quite an achievement. We got there directly on our own two feet and experience built up over thirty years or so.” 0800 472 2537 Northland • Auckland Tauranga • Hamilton Palmerston North • Wellington Nelson • Christchurch www.swia.nz YOUR ONE STOP SHOP FOR ALL YOUR WEIGHING AND INSPECTION REQUIREMENTS We supply scales for all situations from weighbridges, silos, belt weighers, “in motion” check weighing, to analytical balances, electronic platform scales and price computing scales. Proud to be supporting and working alongside Global Metal Solutions. www.smartliving.co.nz | 07 849 8485 sales@smartliving.co.nz Leaving school at 15, absent of formal education and marrying young, Craig says he has been fortunate to have worked at the very top of the scrap metal industry in six different countries – honing and polishing his knowledge, business acumen and international business connections. Craig’s knowledge of the industry started with his father who was a scrap metal trader working for other people. “It was never something we were ever very proud of, because it was next to being a car wrecker and landfilling in those days. It was primarily pakeha controlled back in the day. Dad eventually went off and started a family business called TMI – Tuhoro Metals, which I took over in partnership with another person. That took us through to 1997/98.” Craig’s journey took him to working for CMA Corporation, a Sydney based scrap metal dealer that had operations in six countries including Chicago, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia. Promoted to Chief Operations Officer and then CEO, Craig eventually resigned from the company in 2010 after restructuring the company. “It was at that time that I decided to establish my own business from scratch, rather than work for someone else. When I started GMS we had one truck with one employee. Everyone thought I would last three months but ten years later we are where we are.” With processing sites in Hamilton, Papakura, and New Plymouth GMS specialises in ferrous and non-ferrous metal recycling, bin clearance services, logistics, trading, secure destruction and stewardship. “Everything is processed to international standards and exported overseas,” says Craig. “GMS also supports other family businesses and other industries throughout New Zealand to export their recycling materials to the world, assisting them with logistics, process and capital. We also support many South Pacific countries with exporting their waste streams and recyclables to various destinations.” Up to 70 staff, including 18 family members are employed across GMS’s three processing sites. Of the remaining 52 staff members, 85% are Polynesian and 50% are female. “I’ve been on the corporate path and I’ve seen how easy that is to raise money. Now I’m on the private path. For me it’s a lot slower because I have to raise and find the capital myself. I’m looking to build something long term. It took a few generations to break down Māori wealth. I think it will take a few generations to build it back up again and I would like to build something that stands the test of time.”

8 | DEVELOPMENT Avail Pacific - Te Hononga Te Hononga - community at its heart Richard Loader Shaped in the form of two interlocking hearts, Te Hononga floats over an old riverbed in the centre of the Northland town of Kawakawa. Te Hononga pays homage to Frederick Hundertwasser, an Austrian visual artist and architect who also worked in the field of environmental advocacy. The journey of the project exemplifies the quote often used by Hundertwasser, ‘when we dream alone it is only a dream, but when many dream together it is the beginning of a new reality’. A combined vision of the Kawakawa Hundertwasser Memorial Park Charitable Trust (KHMPCT) and Ngāti Hine artists and crafts people, Te Hononga provides spaces for a public library, community workshop, interpretive centre with video and audio displays of local relationships with Hundertwasser and his philosophies for art and architecture, ecology and conservation. Built on land gifted by Maihi Parone Kawiti for the settlement of Kawakawa, the building belongs to the wider Kawakawa community, and reflects their kaupapa. With a seamless blend of cultural narratives, local artists and crafts people coming together in harmonious collaboration, the building’s shape, form and functionalty has been beautifully designed by award winning Kerikeri architectural and project management practice Avail Pacific. Emphasising the symbiotic nature of the project, Avail Pacific Director Pip Bolton says the design honours Fredrick Hundertwasser and his close friendship with wider Kawakawa community. “Our project scope was to capture the vision of the Hundertwasser Memorial Park Charitable Trust, Ngāti Hine and Hundertwasser’s kaupapa.” Lovingly crafted by a community with passion and determination, the building takes the form of two interlocking hearts. One heart is created from rammed earth, the other Abodo timber, together they symbolise ‘the joining of people’ —‘Te Hononga’. Pip says KHMPCT’s partnership with tangata whenua fostered a collaborative design process resulting in a building that is both beautiful and of cultural significance. Created by Korotangi Kapa-Kingi, Shane Hakaraia and the crew from Hihiaua Cultural Centre, the Pou extends up through two levels of the building to a glass skylight where the Mātui ‘White Tui’, a large sculpture by Te Warihi Hetaraka sits. On the one hand the Pou symbolizes strength and unity of culture, while on the other hand the unravelling or the loss of culture and identity. The Mātui, a mythological bird, is in the act of re-sewing the threads of humanity. Designed by Theresa Reihana, the entrance to the library represents enlightenment in terms of knowledge and life. The Corten steel representation of Te Rākau Oka or The Oak Tree is a symbol of ‘hononga’ between Pākehā and Ngāti Hine. Laser cut in the steel roof are the words whakatauki ‘Ma te mōhio ka marama’, ‘Through knowledge comes light’.” The SIREWALL rammed earth walls depict the length and breadth of Pukepuke Rau (many hills) for all to see, to admire and feel her strength and energy. “One can’t restrain from wanting to embrace and feel her beauty,” says artist Maude Cooke-Davies. “The beautiful colour palette represented in the walls and throughout Te Hononga takes the form of two interlocking hearts.

It was fun to be part of.” Pip and Avail Pacific’s design work on Te Hononga was acknowledged at the 2021 Architectural Designers of New Zealand (ADNZ) design awards, winning the Commercial Interiors Architectural Design Award. “As a designer it is wonderful to be recognised, but it is equally important to acknowledge the project team. “As well as the architectural shape, form and function, the inspirational work of the individual artists involved brought the building to life. “It’ s exciting for the client to win a prestigious award, and we are all celebrating together.”

14 | DEVELOPMENT Canam Group Canam branching out to regions Karen Phelps With a long established headquarters in Auckland, Canam is branching out and continuing to grow a significant presence in the regions. The company has an office in the Bay of Plenty and a recently established office in Northland, which has secured some significant projects including the Cavalli Fire Station, Kaipara Service Centre and Whangārei Civic Centre. Canam Commercials General Manager Tonchi Glamuzina says that the civic centre project has amply demonstrated Canam’s collaborative approach. The council invited contractors to get a team together with consultants to tender for the contract. to page 17 Part of the process was to invite each short-listed team to meet with council to engage in some workshops to determine how the team worked. Tonchi says the intent was for council to identify the right culture and a compatible team. The result was that the Canam Construction team was awarded the contract. Tonchi has taken the company culture on something he calls Te Haerenga or the journey: “It’s about encouraging an approach where our team, the wider team and the client are all on a journey together to ensure a great project outcome. “It’s about sharing, learning and growing together,” says Tonchi. “We’re very focused on moving forward on projects, always in a positive way.” For the Whangārei Civic Centre he says early contractor involvement allowed council to obtain certainty around cost and programme. Canam also helped assess different structural options put forward and, when it was determined the building needed to be larger for future proofing, also helped with feedback and programme detailing so a decision could be made. He says the project is progressing smoothly and is on track for completing in late 2022. “Canam has the ability to scale up easily for jobs in the region. Connections and relationships allow us to secure great people and put together a winning team.” Another project underway in Northland is the Kaipara Service Centre, which also demonstrates a highly collaborative approach, says Tonchi. The two-year project, was started in April 2020 and has seen the entire team working together.

That’s a great strength of working in the regions, everyone is willing to work together.” In the Bay of Plenty Canam is working on a school refurbishment for the Ministry of Education and has just completed the Bay of Plenty Regional House. The Regional House project included substantial demolition works, new structural steel work, carbon fibre reinforced polymer application to existing block walls, new curtain walls on all four elevations and a new roof. It also included all new services infrastructure, a new entrance canopy and full internal fit-out on four levels including public reception area, council chambers and open plan office areas with toilets as well as the introduction of a new internal feature staircase. Current projects in Auckland include Studio West in Glen Eden, Huhtamaki’s office block, 45 Mt Eden Road boutique apartments and the build-to-rent Morningside Apartments. Tonchi says Canam likes to target projects, which it is passionate about. Typically these are challenging and outside the square as this is where the expertise of the team can add most value. “We take on projects where we can really make a difference.” An Innovative Approach Tonchi Glamuzina says that Canam aims to think outside the square to deliver best value for clients. In the Covid-19 environment this has really come to the fore. With supply constraints on materials, Canam has been able to leverage its know-how and relationships to find ways to obtain materials to ensure project time-lines are met. For example with timber in short supply it took an innovative approach on one project, going direct to a forestry source to obtain poles for a piling job and then got the supply chain to acquire them. Constraints of raw timber has also seen the company explore and utilise new materials such as cross laminated timber, a strong structural timber engineered wood product consisting of layers of kiln-dried dimension lumber oriented at right angles to one another and then glued to form structural panels. The product can deliver excellent structural rigidity in both directions, he says. Both products can come with green credentials (carbon credits) and can be more cost effective, according to Tonchi. They have so far been used for flooring and wall options on projects, while structural steel has become another focus with better lead times and fixed pricing,
18 | DEVELOPMENT Abron Group Townhouse development popular Karen Phelps A family affair: from left, Cameron, Howard and Abbie. to page 20 Bay of Plenty developer Abron Group is busy working on a number of projects in the region that are getting eagerly snapped up by buyers, says Abron Group managing director Howard Scott. Norfolk Rise is one such development. The company is working on building the first ten terraced homes out of a total of 30 in the development. Reaction has been extremely positive driven by a shortage of stock in Tauranga and people looking for options other than a stand-alone house on a piece of land,” says Howard. The townhouses are all three bedroom, two bathroom, architecturally designed homes and are situated on their own freehold titles. Situated in a central Otumoetai location, Norfolk Rise is tailored to the astute buyer looking for a turnkey investment of the highest quality but none of the maintenance, says Howard. “Norfolk Rise has easy access to the expressway, with many shops and all levels of schooling within close proximity, including a short walk to Brookfield Primary School. To date, the development has been popular across the board with first home buyers, downsizers and investors alike,” he says. The first terraced homes are due for completion in spring 2022 and the Stage 3 release is due to the market around March this year. Howard advises people to register their interest on the Abron Group website to be the first to receive the pre-sales information. Abron Group is also busy working on two developments in Katikati. There are around 26 sites left in future stages of Highfield Crossing with 15 currently under construction in the current stage. Future stages will come on stream later this year. Highfields Crossing features 74 sites across its three stages, offering a mixture of two and three bedroom homes, specifically designed within a landscaped and private community. It offers a generous variety of lot sizes ranging 027 4492826 / 07 5783900 lifestyledoors@xtra.co.nz www.lifestyledoors.co.nz Premier Garage Door Systems in Tauranga A beautiful and practical addition to your property • Drainage • Renovations • NewHomes • Repairs 07 571 0625 Craftsman Plumbers & Drainlayers We are proud to be associated with Abron Group ontime@plumberman.co.nz from 262sqm to 900sqm. The sites are of easy contour, and positioned to enjoy the view of the nearby Kaimai Ranges. “Highfields Crossing is being fashioned to suit the discerning home owner,” explains Howard. “A high specification throughout the homes is a defining feature, with quality building covenants in place to protect people’s investment.” Highfields Crossing is situated within a short stroll of Katikati’s Haiku pathway, close to the restful Uretara Stream and reserve walks. It is just minutes from the heart of Katikati where there are plenty of cafes, restaurants, local shops, schools and amenities. Also in the township of Katikati, all earthworks have been completed and civil works are commencing on Abron Group’s newest development, Park Road.

Howard says the homes are geared towards the retiree market as well as first homebuyers and will be released to the market in mid to late 2023. Founded in 1998 Abron Group is involved from the ground up in all of its developments from sourcing land and working with industry professionals such as surveyors and engineers through to civil development (owning its own heavy machinery), obtaining titles, house design and construction. Howard says this gives good control over all aspects of the project, in particular quality and timing. Abron Group is family owned with Howard’s children involved in the day to day running of the business. Son Cameron takes on the operations manager role on civil and subdivision projects and daughter Abbie takes the helm with the sales and marketing of off the plan as well as completed homes. Daughter in law Tracy joined the team as design consultant most recently, working closely with clients to ensure positive outcomes across the build. Abron Group is also working on a number of projects in Omokoroa including The Grove on Western where it is offering spec homes for sale and at a new site on Western Avenue, where a mix of stand-alone homes and townhouses will be completed with 40 titles to come to the market. It also has a 61-site medium density townhouse development in process at Tom Muir Drive in Tauranga.
