14 | DEVELOPMENT Canam Group Canam branching out to regions Karen Phelps With a long established headquarters in Auckland, Canam is branching out and continuing to grow a significant presence in the regions. The company has an office in the Bay of Plenty and a recently established office in Northland, which has secured some significant projects including the Cavalli Fire Station, Kaipara Service Centre and Whangārei Civic Centre. Canam Commercials General Manager Tonchi Glamuzina says that the civic centre project has amply demonstrated Canam’s collaborative approach. The council invited contractors to get a team together with consultants to tender for the contract. to page 17 Part of the process was to invite each short-listed team to meet with council to engage in some workshops to determine how the team worked. Tonchi says the intent was for council to identify the right culture and a compatible team. The result was that the Canam Construction team was awarded the contract. Tonchi has taken the company culture on something he calls Te Haerenga or the journey: “It’s about encouraging an approach where our team, the wider team and the client are all on a journey together to ensure a great project outcome. “It’s about sharing, learning and growing together,” says Tonchi. “We’re very focused on moving forward on projects, always in a positive way.” For the Whangārei Civic Centre he says early contractor involvement allowed council to obtain certainty around cost and programme. Canam also helped assess different structural options put forward and, when it was determined the building needed to be larger for future proofing, also helped with feedback and programme detailing so a decision could be made. He says the project is progressing smoothly and is on track for completing in late 2022. “Canam has the ability to scale up easily for jobs in the region. Connections and relationships allow us to secure great people and put together a winning team.” Another project underway in Northland is the Kaipara Service Centre, which also demonstrates a highly collaborative approach, says Tonchi. The two-year project, was started in April 2020 and has seen the entire team working together.
