That’s a great strength of working in the regions, everyone is willing to work together.” In the Bay of Plenty Canam is working on a school refurbishment for the Ministry of Education and has just completed the Bay of Plenty Regional House. The Regional House project included substantial demolition works, new structural steel work, carbon fibre reinforced polymer application to existing block walls, new curtain walls on all four elevations and a new roof. It also included all new services infrastructure, a new entrance canopy and full internal fit-out on four levels including public reception area, council chambers and open plan office areas with toilets as well as the introduction of a new internal feature staircase. Current projects in Auckland include Studio West in Glen Eden, Huhtamaki’s office block, 45 Mt Eden Road boutique apartments and the build-to-rent Morningside Apartments. Tonchi says Canam likes to target projects, which it is passionate about. Typically these are challenging and outside the square as this is where the expertise of the team can add most value. “We take on projects where we can really make a difference.” An Innovative Approach Tonchi Glamuzina says that Canam aims to think outside the square to deliver best value for clients. In the Covid-19 environment this has really come to the fore. With supply constraints on materials, Canam has been able to leverage its know-how and relationships to find ways to obtain materials to ensure project time-lines are met. For example with timber in short supply it took an innovative approach on one project, going direct to a forestry source to obtain poles for a piling job and then got the supply chain to acquire them. Constraints of raw timber has also seen the company explore and utilise new materials such as cross laminated timber, a strong structural timber engineered wood product consisting of layers of kiln-dried dimension lumber oriented at right angles to one another and then glued to form structural panels. The product can deliver excellent structural rigidity in both directions, he says. Both products can come with green credentials (carbon credits) and can be more cost effective, according to Tonchi. They have so far been used for flooring and wall options on projects, while structural steel has become another focus with better lead times and fixed pricing,
