30 | Waipa: Waipa Civil REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT A decade of top project delivery Sue Russell Waipa Civil core activities include drainage, directional drilling and water. Cambridge-based Waipa Civil has been operating a decade now, established by Directors Joe Comins and Ryan George. The company services Council, Government, Commercial and Private clients, and given the level of activity in the civil works sectors, is busier than ever. Daryll Walker, Waipa Civil’s General Manager, has been with the company since early 2019. He was drawn to the company following 20 years of construction experience and a deep understanding of managing large scale civil projects, because he liked the ‘out of the box’ thinking, that permeated the business. “Our specialists are really clever people, used to problem solving and getting the job done. I liked that capability and wanted to add value to the culture and bring more business our way,” Daryll says. He is focusing increasingly on the contractual side of the business, creating relationships with new clients and ensuring existing clients receive the service they have come to expect of the company. Waipa Civil core activities include drainage, directional drilling and water. Each division has specialist staff overseeing projects. Daryll puts the success of the business down to an attitude to seize opportunities when these present. Case in point: Waipa Civil acquired a directional drilling rig for a small project as it seemed the most cost beneficial way to undertake the specific project for the client. “With this we acquired the appropriate personnel to undertake the works. The project was delivered on-time and on budget for the client”. Due to this foresight from the team, directional drilling is now a key component for the business. And with the expansion of new subdivisions, driven by new housing policy, there’s plenty of work on the go. “We are looking for more staff and what we want is the person with the right attitude and work-ethic. “We can train them up and we pair a new one in with an experienced foreman. We prefer to train in-house but need to balance new staff with those who will supervise.” Our family business is proud to support another great New Zealand business like Waipa Civil so they can keep moving, delivering high-quality drainage and utility installations throughout Waikato and Bay of Plenty. It’s work extends predominantly over the greater Waikato. “ We had taken on work in the Bay of Plenty and down in Taupo. We pride ourselves on our clients calling us, including Hamilton City Council and Waipa District Council. Take in those two territorial authorities and there’s a lot of work happening.” Drilling work has picked up with new subdivisions, along with the ongoing upgrading of old services throughout the cities and towns. Daryll says the overall housing shortage in New Zealand and the consequent ballooning in new houses, and infill housing, has all played its part in placing a burdening demand on old civil infrastructure and coupled with new subdivision projects, there’s plenty of ongoing work. He says its especially gratifying to look at the skills and capabilities of the guys who have worked their way up into supervisory and management roles. “They are the ones who have come through the bottom tier to where they are now. They understand this company very well and that contributes to us being the strong company we are today.” Especially when it comes to drilling, Daryll says there’s always an element of uncertainty as to what a team may encounter. “The more planning you can do the better because bad things can happen and you have to be prepared for this.”
