GMS – answering the call General Marine Services Limited (GMS) started as a marine engineering company in 1993 working out of a car and a van, before they moved into their irst workshop on the waterfront. They soon illed a gap in the market by selling their engineering products to the retail market as well as specialist tradespeople, on top of everything their service team already o ered the marine industry. These days they’re that and more as GMS director Roy Chalton explains. “We’re probably one of the biggest service providers and specialist marine product suppliers to the industry nationally. We’ve got one of the largest teams of marine service techs in Auckland, and we’re very proud to be on-site at this amazing new marine park.” He’s talking about the newly developed Orams Yard in downtown Auckland. In a quirk of history GMS’s irst premises were in the yardarm building at the original Orams Yard. They moved across the road when the site was developed several years ago and continued to build on a strong partnership with the Orams team. The move back into the redeveloped Orams Yard suits GMS’s own scale and capacity which makes them a good it for yard. “It’s the largest marine re it facility for superyachts in the Southern Hemisphere,” says Roy. “Fortunately, the yard retained the smaller existing lift and added a mid-size machine to cover all the bases with local demand which suits us perfectly” The Orams haul out capability to deal with vessels big and small makes it the perfect site for GMS who worked on the irst two superyachts to come to New Zealand back in the 90’s, but whose business has grown to support and service any type of vessel, recreational or commercial. Their services range from engines, generators and propulsion, pumps, plumbing and luid handling, to certi ied fabrication, installation and machining. Their retail arm o ers a large range of plant and equipment including highly respected brands such as Scania, Cummins, Onan, Bauer, Hamilton Jet and Gianneschi, with all products fully backed by the GMS service department. “Having a direct connection between the GMS Store and GMS services simpli ies getting the right part and means they can meet your repair or service needs more e iciently,” says Roy. In addition to the premises at Orams Yard, General Marine Services have recently moved into a large facility ten minutes’ drive away in Te Atatu South. That’s where GMS can take major engine work o -site, or build larger systems ready for installation on the vessels hauled at Orams yard, systems such as a sewage treatment plants, desalination plants, engine frames, system component brackets etc. Being able to do large fabrication work o -site streamlines their services at Orams Yard, adding to their capacity and speeding up their delivery time. “Having the workshop at Orams and the new headquarters at Te Atatu means we can take on larger projects, without losing sight of our smaller local clientele,” says Roy. “Whether you’re a superyacht, a Fullers Ferry, family cruiser or a recreational diver we want to support you with whatever you need so that you can get out and enjoy the ocean safely with quality systems, machinery and gear you can have con idence in.”
