New Zealand is highly regarded in the superyacht world thanks to a history of building award-winning superyachts, the significant number of Kiwi captains and crew of superyachts currently in play around the world, and being known for the highly-skilled workforce operating across all trades and disciplines in the refit yard. “We’re lucky to have a really strong network of people around the world who can speak firsthand on the quality of work here, and who are always happy to bring the yachts they work on to New Zealand,” says Craig. As a result Orams Marine has been the destination of choice in this region since the late 1980s. Orams’ focus on sustainability, recycling wherever possible, and creating an eco-friendly framework for the next five years is another fact in their favour. Given the amount of space needed for a fully operational shipyard of this size they would more usually be located in an industrial zone, and Orams worked closely with the city council during the debate about whether the historic precinct would retain some of its marine heritage while also catering for other mixed usage. ‘It’s unusual in that from the yard you can see straight down the road to Auckland’s CBD which is part of the reason we’ve been so popular with international crew,” says Craig, “They might have had six months or a year being in fairly remote places and they get here and they can get off the boat after work and walk down to a bar. “We design our work around our clients’ needs which we see as a partnership, so it’s a continuous conversation we have with captains, crew and management. “Having all these amenities on our doorstep, plus all the marine specialist services and supplies at hand makes it an easy conversation to have.” While they may benefit from New Zealand’s history as an innovative, sea-faring nation, it’s clear Orams has everything it needs to add its bit to this country’s marine reputation. Orams Marine Yard has grown and developed along with the Wynyard Quarter.
