90 | Kelly Deeks Diack Homes is enjoying the challenges of high-end architectural builds. Young firm committed to the next generation BUILDING Diack Homes Two years after taking out the Bay of Plenty/Central Plateau Registered Master Builders Carters 2019 Apprentice of the Year title, Cameron Diack of Diack Homes now has one of his own apprentices, Damien Quarrie, place second in this year’s regional competition. Damien started with Diack Homes as a second year apprentice when the company started out in 2019. Cameron says Damien’s eye for detail and high quality of workmanship stood him in good stead to achieve well at Apprentice of the Year. Now qualified and running a job site, Damien is gaining some good learning with an architectural build with a 7m stud, passive house principles, and a variety of new materials in Tauranga. “We’re using the fully integrated Firth RibRaft® HotEdge® system, Thermopanel insulated roof panels, and an interior air barrier,” Cameron says. “The majority of the home has a mezzanine floor through it and in the lounge area, there is a big raking 7m ceiling. So a lot of engineering and some good learning for Damien on this project, and some good learning for me as well.” Diack Homes is now training first year apprentice Dale Houghton whose farming background, hardworking attitude, and considerable practical skills see him excelling. Cameron days Dale could be one to watch in future Apprentice of the Year competitions. Diack Homes places a big emphasis on tailored training with monthly progress and performance reviews undertaken with every member of staff. Cameron uses a scorecard system to track progress, performance, and goals, and through constant and consistent monitoring and recording is able to pick up on when apprentices are ready to run their own project as well as the type of work they need to be doing in order to progress their experience and knowledge. “We also make sure we invest in the personal lives of our staff as well,” he says. “We make sure things are okay at home, that they are happy and tracking well and everything is good for them personally. “There is a massive need in the construction industry for a mental health focus, and we are making sure we focus on it.” Cameron takes business coaching from The Professional Builder, and this training strategy is one of the ways he is implementing what he is learning. Now into his third year in business, Cameron says the highs, lows, twists, and turns are just like a rollercoaster, so it’s up to him to make sure the business stays firmly on the track and that everyone is having a good time. “Being a young company, we are putting ourselves out there to make sure we are learning a lot, so we can do our best to deliver for our clients to the best of our ability.” He says Diack Homes is focusing on team culture and systemisation. “ “We want a really good working environment for our team, and everything systemised on site so we can make sure our clients are enjoying the process and they have clarity around it.” A fresh thoughtful approach to architecture 021 846 603 | admin@lba.nz | www.lba.nz New Homes / Alterations / Light Commercial Seasonal Worker Accommodation ...we o er competitive rates and a range of interior and exterior painting services.
