| 91 “We’re at a really good size now, more organic and the focus on ensuring the technologies and systems we use are leading-edge enables us to operate at this very efficient size.” Sue Russell N Cole Construction is underway with the construction of the Winger Suzuki showroom. BUILDING N. Cole Construction This year marks 90 candles on the birthday cake for Auckland building and construction business N. Cole Construction and for Tony Hird, the company’s Commercial Manager, the success of the enterprise comes down to a top-notch culture underpinned by passionate professionals. Tony’s been in the role two years and was attracted to the company after a long association with its owner. “I just knew this was the sort of company I wanted to contribute to. Though it is an old business with a rich history, it’s the future that I’m most excited about,” Tony says. N. Cole Construction delivers a wide range of services, across commercial and residential sectors. It’s management team includes experienced project and site managers and given its long history, the business has formed many key relationships with Government and Council organisations, commercial partners and private developers. The company specialises in commercial construction, seismic upgrades, heritage restoration and refurbishments, civic projects, and industrial developments. Operating with a smaller team has been a deliberate decision. “We’re at a really good size now, more organic and the focus on ensuring the technologies and systems we use are leading-edge enables us to operate at this very efficient size.” Covid had brought its share of challenges and necessary adaptations but Tony says once the company has the necessary health and safety systems to ensure on-site staff were safe at all times. With the help of willing clients and early contractor engagement, Tony says that to date N. Cole Constructionn has not been affected by constraints on the supply of building materials, which is a growing tension within the wider construction industry. Tony puts that down to having excellent long-term relationships with suppliers and ensuring that projects are planned well in advance. “We have got plenty of projects on the go and 2022 is looking very positive for us. “We have some school work on the North Shore for a private school, and we’re underway with a great build for Winger Suzuki in Greenlane; a brand new show-room with a really cool cantilevered canopy.” The new show-room sits adjacent to the company’s existing headquarters and promises to make a real statement, with its extensive sloping canopy protruding out toward the site’s frontage. Once completed, the building will feel very light and airy, with extensive use of steel framing and glass. When Business North spoke with Tony early January, the buildings precast concrete panels had been stood up. Despite some challenges, including the discovery of a shallow basalt pit work has gone to schedule and it is expected to be completed in June this year. N. Cole Construction built the brand new state-of-the-art East Coast Bays Fire & Emergency precinct, which opened in July last year. “These are the sorts of projects we like to get involved in. “They’re really important facilities, that add tremendous value to the community.” A drive around Auckland’s Tamaki Drive will introduce travellers to one of the city’s iconic images; The Mission Bay Fountain, built by N. Cole Construction and gifted to Auckland city in 1950 by Eliot Davis. “We’re very proud of our history and contribution to this city. “This is an exciting era in Auckland’s development with restoration and transformation of old heritage buildings, repurposed for the future, new residential and commercial precincts and development of community facilities.” Long serving firm still at the top of its game COMMERCIAL ∙ RESIDENTIAL ∙ CIVIL ∙ INFRASTRUCTURE Setouts - Asbuilts - Topographic Surveys - Monitoring - Aerial Surveys - Roading & Rail When it has to be right.
