When they are ready to move on they can go anywhere.” BUILDING Calibre Homes has carved out a niche in Auckland’s residential market by taking on construction projects many builders walk away from, building a reputation for technical problem solving, craftsmanship, and a willingness to tackle the more complex jobs. Director Jake Woods brings over 30 years in construction to the role, including 18 years leading Calibre Homes, a career that started in boat building, which continues to influence how he approaches difficult forms and demanding finishes. That background proved invaluable on a recent renovation where one entire side of the house was round. Previous contractors had declined the work, but Calibre Homes accepted the challenge, rebuilding the structure from the ground up. “We replaced everything,” Jake says. “New roofing, new framing, new walls. The original build was about 30 years old, and there were a lot of issues where things simply did not stack up from an engineering perspective. We made it work, and we made it look good.” The level of complexity required input from multiple designers and engineers over the course of the job, reinforcing Jake’s view that projects that appear straightforward on the surface often involve significant expertise behind the scenes. “To make something look simple takes a huge amount of planning, coordination, and experience,” he says. He also notes the value that is added to his business by being a member of the Master Builders Association, which provides support around systems and processes, as well as its recent advice and help with how to navigate these difficult economic times. While market conditions have been tight, Jake says enquiry levels are now beginning to improve. “Construction is always the first to fall and the first to bounce back. We have seen the ups and downs before, so it is about being smart and staying steady.” A key part of that long-term view is investment in people. When they are ready to move on they can go anywhere.” One recent apprentice completed her time with the company and earned a regional Apprentice of the Year award, an achievement Jake says highlights what can be done when the right apprentice receives the right mentoring in the right environment. Strong working relationships are another cornerstone of Calibre Homes. Jake currently sits on the Auckland Master Builders executive board. He says collaborating early with trusted architects, engineers and other industry experts helps align expectations, manage budgets, and avoid costly redesign later. “Once you have the right people around you, you can solve just about any problem.” Digital communication tools are also improving efficiency, with shared project groups allowing subcontractors to see updates and variations as they happen, reducing delays and misunderstandings onsite. For Jake, the reward comes from guiding clients and staff through builds that might once have felt overwhelming. “These projects become your baby,” Jake says. “You live them every day for months or sometimes years. Helping clients see a complicated job come together, and watching young builders grow in confidence brings a huge amount of personal satisfaction.” With decades of experience behind him, and a team he continues to mentor closely, Jake says Calibre Homes remains focused on delivering workmanship that stands the test of time. No job too difficult for Jake “If we can hand over a house knowing we have solved the problems properly and everyone is proud of the result, then we have done our job.”
