T T to page 20 REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Undertaking complex projects across a diverse range of sectors requires Kalmar Construction to operate with multiple layers of expertise, systems, and processes to consistently deliver results both the company and its clients are proud of. At any one time, the business - which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary - is structured to manage seven to eight substantial construction projects, alongside interiors and structural projects delivered through its in-house divisions. Based in Takapuna, Auckland, Kalmar Construction directly employs a multicultural team of around 170 people, and operates primarily as a main contractor, managing projects from early contractor involvement through to practical completion. This includes pre-construction planning and budgeting, value engineering and build-ability input, full project management, construction delivery, and site supervision, along with coordination of specialist trades, programme management, and cost control. Many of the projects Kalmar undertakes are technically detailed and often delivered in stages, requiring disciplined site management and close coordination with consultants. A key component of the company’s capability is its specialist concrete and posttension division, which manages a broad range of structural works, including high-rise structures, post-tensioned slabs, precast construction, retaining walls, multi-level car parks, and architectural concrete features. Kalmar Construction’s business development manager, Neil Ball, says bringing these capabilities in-house creates significant advantages. “Rather than splitting structural elements across multiple suppliers and installers, our concrete division allows us to integrate design coordination, procurement, and installation. That reduces risk and strengthens programme control, particularly on multi-level structures.” The technical nature of post-tension construction is not widely understood in New Zealand, and only a small number of contractors are able to offer the full design coordination and delivery capability, he says. Kalmar Construction is widely recognised for its high-profile apartment developments. However, its experience spans virtually every sector, including healthcare, civic and community facilities, commercial buildings, and industrial developments. “The way our business operates allows us to scale across a range of projects,” Neil says. “We can deliver smaller specialist projects while also managing large and complex developments.” During the past two decades Kalmar Construction has received numerous industry awards, reflecting the quality of planning, coordination and execution behind each project, and recognising the collective effort of project teams and subcontractors. “Recognition for the projects we deliver helps build our reputation and provides owners and developers with confidence that we can deliver.” Strong relationships across the industry have also played a significant role in the company’s success. “Relationships are an important part of construction. We’re only as good as our subcontractors, so having strong partnerships and consistent performance across the supply chain is critical,” says Neil. Kalmar’s workforce has grown significantly over the years, supported by apprenticeships, internships and cadet pathways designed to develop capability within the business. Its team continues to evolve, shaped by demand, and deliberate recruitment from a wide range of backgrounds.
