Earthworx 2012 “We can tackle big projects quickly, often faster than much larger contractors, because we’re agile, hands-on, and deeply involved in every stage of the job.” CONTRACTING Strong demand in Northland across residential and commercial subdivision development, along with ongoing requirements for enabling works, has created sustained demand for capable civil contractors like Earthworx. The capacity to deliver complex projects at pace sees the Whangarei-based contractor experiencing one of its busiest periods yet, and creating opportunities for new staff across the region. Founded in 2012 by Hans Garton and his wife Tania, the family-owned Earthworx has grown steadily to a team of about 40, and is now actively recruiting. Hans says the workload reflects both the pace of development in the region and Earthworx’s reputation for delivering complex projects efficiently. “Speed of delivery speed is something we’re really proud of,” he says. “We can tackle big projects quickly, often faster than much larger contractors, because we’re agile, hands-on, and deeply involved in every stage of the job.” Earthworx undertakes a wide range of civil works, including residential and commercial subdivisions, farm development, slip repairs, retaining walls, and environmentally sensitive projects. Its capability is supported by inhouse engineering expertise, GPS-controlled machinery, and teams with extensive on-theground experience. Hans is Northland born and bred, and says the company’s success is closely tied to a commitment to the local community. “We want people to succeed up here,” he says. “This is home for us, and we treat every site as if we’re building in our own backyard.” Earthworx commitment to the region resonates with clients, who want contractors that understand local conditions, communities, and expectations. That alignment has positioned the business as a trusted delivery partner, underpinning its continued growth. Its local focus extends to employment, with Earthworx attracting strong interest from people wanting to work in the industry. Hans says the company is focused on hiring people that are prepared to put in the effort and grow their skills. After growing an earlier earthmoving business with family members, then spending time working for a larger contractor, Hans launched Earthworx with a clear understanding of what it takes to build a resilient operation. “I’ve done every role from the ground up,” he says. “Manual labour, machine operating, junior and senior management. That experience shapes how we run the business and how we support our team.” Hans and the Earthworx leadership team’s depth of practical experience informs realistic programming, strong site leadership, and efficient sequencing of work. It reduces rework and delays, helping projects stay on track. Earthworx has built longstanding relationships with councils, consultants, developers, and landowners across the region, while industry recognition from Civil Contractors New Zealand for quality, environmental outcomes, and leadership has further strengthened confidence in the business. At its core, Earthworx operates on a simple philosophy: get the details right, look after people, and deliver for clients. Hans says those values were shaped by his upbringing on a family farm, where hard work, resourcefulness, and learning how to turn opportunity into progress were part of everyday life.
