JOINERY Redwood Joinery T T Russell Fredric “We’re a small family-owned business and I think that’s quite relatable to a lot of people in Rotorua. They like that they’re supporting the small guys.” Family-owned Rotorua business Redwood Joinery combines design, craftsmanship and strong local relationships to deliver high quality commercial and residential joinery across Bay of Plenty. Owned by Shane and Karlene Edkins, Redwood Joinery is approaching a decade in operation, having been established from scratch by the Rotorua-born couple. Shane has worked in the joinery industry since he was 15, while Karlene’s background is in marketing, a complementary skillset that has supported the company’s steady growth. “Shane having the knowledge of the joinery played a huge part in getting it up off the ground and we’re both born and bred in Rotorua, so that helped with knowing quite a few builders and other people in the industry.” Shane and Karlene engaged a business mentor, who was also a 50% equity partner for the first two years, and who provided guidance and helped shape systems, processes, and direction while the couple balanced the demands of their new venture and young-family life. “It was actually really good. He was a fantastic mentor for us for the first few years in helping us establish the company,” Karlene says. Redwood Joinery employs five staff including Shane and Karlene and has been involved in some impressive residential and commercial projects that have been recognised with both House of the Year and industry awards. Fitouts for offices and hospitality venues sit alongside kitchens and full house lots of joinery, based on full CAD design, manufacture and installation for sometimes complex projects. A high level of detailing and craftsmanship are a defining feature of the business. Regardless of the type of work, repeat clients and referrals underpin the workflow, reflecting the importance of Redwood Joinery’s reputation for its ongoing success. “The majority of our work that comes through the door is through word of mouth and recommendation. We’ve got clients that come back for their fourth, fifth kitchen.” “We’re a small family-owned business and I think that’s quite relatable to a lot of people in Rotorua. They like that they’re supporting the small guys.” Redwood Joinery provides a full in-house service from initial consultation and design through to manufacture and installation, ensuring consistency and accountability across every stage of a project. The workshop has a full factory set-up including CAD software with integration to a KDT CNC router and edge bander, supporting efficient production while offering flexibility. All tradesmen are trained across the full production process, from machining through to assembly, ensuring continuity within the team. Investment in systems and people over the past decade has helped Shane and Karlene refine their workflow and establish a sustainable work-life balance after the intensive early years of building the company. “We really put our heart and souls into getting it to where it needs to be, but now we’ve got the systems and processes in place and a really great team that support us.” Looking ahead, confirmed projects and ongoing inquiry levels are providing confidence for the year ahead, with further house lots of joinery secured. “We do everything from meeting with the client, design, product selection, manufacture, and we install ourselves too. We do everything in-house.” P 021 122 5448 E shane@rwj.co.nz W redwoodjoinery.co.nz Specialising in quality kitchens, commercial fitouts, and custom joinery in the Rotorua and greater Bay of Plenty Region Start to finish Rotorua fitout and joinery services - from design & manufacture to installation New builds, renovations, quality workmanship guaranteed 027 300 5626 www.pedersenhomes.nz
