| 49 HEB Construction - Mount Maunganui: Opotiki Harbour Development The Opotiki Harbour Development Project will see the construction of two sea walls either side of a new channel dredged to a depth of about four metres. REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT key stakeholders and funding partners in the project. David says working closely with local iwi Whakatohea has been an important part of the project. Part of this has been assisting lo - cals to be able to work on the project, creating significant employment opportunities in the region. Training has been undertaken to up-skill the local workforce and now more than half the project team is local and four apprenticeships are underway. “This will really help to develop the skills of the local workforce, which will have positive impacts for their futures far beyond the dura- tion of this project,” he says. Engagement with the local community has also further involved locals in the project. For example two tonne concrete units have been dropped off at local schools so the students can come up with a unique design and decorate them. The units will be placed on the top of breakwaters as seating areas and will be labelled with the details of the schools that painted them. HEB Construction is also in discussions with Whakatohea to incorporate other cultural elements into the breakwaters. David says by December this year around 220m will have been completed of the eastern breakwater and 80m of the western break- water. The project is on track and the new channel will be open in late 2023. He says re-establishing the harbour will provide numerous benefits to the region by capitalising on opportunities from the existing 3,800-hectare marine farm offshore from Opotiki and enabling other aquaculture ven- tures and marine related development. “Ultimately this project will bring huge gains to the local community in terms of employ- ment with spinoff social and cultural benefits for Opotiki and the wider Eastern Bay of Plen - ty. It is a project that HEB Construction is very proud to be helping to become a reality.” POWERPAC, NEW ZEALAND'S CONSTRUCTION AND ENGINEERING EQUIPMENT SPECIALISTS We Know How Important It Is To Get The Right Tool For The Job.
