The Tauriko project has been some years in the making. It was in 2016 that Winstone Wall- boards saw that its current Auckland facility in Onehunga would not be able to meet future demand as it’s land locked, which has prevent- ed expansion of operations and improving efficiencies by consolidating manufacturing and distribution on the same site. Originally a site was sought in Auckland but soon it became apparent there would be many benefits in moving the facility to Tauran- ga. Western Bay of Plenty region’s economic development organisation Priority One was engaged to help identify land opportunities in the region and shortly after Winstone Wall- boards started working with the developer of Tauriko Business Park and a 12.8ha site was secured, which is more than double the size of the current facility and will allow for future capacity growth, says Stewart. He says the new facility will enable Win- stone Wallboards to meet demand for the long term and the 66,000sqm of floor area spread over two buildings will incorporate the company’s North Island plasterboard manu- facturing, national compounds manufactur- ing and North Island distribution of finished products into merchant stores. Community engagement has been a key part of Winstone’s Tauriko project.
