The company has worked on past Watercare projects and Ward Demolition New Zealand regional manager Chris Harrison says that this has aided the project as Ward Demolition is well versed in the expectations of this complex project. Subsequently it has seen Ward Demolition subcontract to Ghella Abergeldie to remove thousands of tonnes of contaminated soil from a site in Mays Road, Mt Roskill. Ward Demolition’s asbestos certi ied sta managed the large and challenging project with the boggy site making access tricky, says Chris. Access roads were created and the project also took place next to a waterway meaning the construction of a containment system. Chris says the successful completion of the project was a real testament to the skills of the Ward Demolition team and required careful planning and execution. Other projects that Ward Demolition has completed on the Central Interceptor project include asbestos material removal from three houses in Mt Roskill and subsequent demolition, asbestos soil removal and remediation from the Keith Hay Park area in Mount Roskill and demolition of large concrete tanks at Māngere Pump Station. Chris says the tanks required working in a con ined space so the Ward Demolition team came up with a methodology involving a range of concrete breaking attachments applied to excavators to create holes in the tanks to allow the materials inside to be safely removed. A range of buildings on the site was also demolished. Materials from all projects were salvaged and with a large emphasis on the recycled concrete. With its main o ice in Onehunga, Auckland, and its other o ice based in Wellington, they are able to service the entire country. Ward Demolition was started in 1987 and the company has now grown to comprise many di erent divisions and employing over 120 permanent sta and over two hundred sub-contracted sta across the country. Ward Demolition deals with all facets of demolition from commercial to residential, and industrial demolition. Ward Salvage recycles materials from sites, such as bricks, timber, joists, iron, steel, weatherboards, windows, and benches, and on-sells them to the community. Ward Equipment develops and customises equipment to supply to the other Ward Divisions as well as hiring equipment to other companies. Ward Resource Recovery is the division that recycles and reuses materials from site where possible, for example crushing concrete into aggregate. This division sometimes works in conjunction with Ward Quarry. Chris says that the strength of Ward Group is that divisions can support each other to get the job done quickly and e iciently for the client, often saving money along the way. He credits the skilled team as a key factor in the company’s on-going success combined with a huge leet of machinery. The company o ers over 70 excavators ranging in size from one tonne to 70 tonne, including high reach, super high reach, skid steer loaders and wheel loaders. The haulage leet consists of 25 trucks and trailers, hook bins and articulated burrel bins, ranging in size from four wheelers to eight wheelers. All vehicles are equipped with GPS systems. It has three transporter trucks that move plant to various sites, as well as four crushing and screening plants. This all gives Ward Demolition great control over the timing and quality of projects, says Chris, enabling e icient delivery on time and on budget. Health and safety has always been a strong cornerstone of the business and the company was proud to take out that health & safety best practice award at the 2019 New Zealand Demolition & Asbestos Association Awards, and shortlisted for the World Demolition Awards 2021 in Chicago in October for the category Safety and Training. As members of Site Safe, all sta holds Site Safe Passports and attends regular training for all areas of work in demolition. Chris says the company’s work on the Central Interceptor project shows its skill, lexibility, and adaptability. “It proves Ward Demolition is able to work collaboratively with major infrastructure companies to deliver the best environmentally sustainable solutions that meet project budgets and timelines.”
