Fletcher Building CEO Ross Taylor says the company is firmly committed to local manu- facturing and delivering the highest quality product for New Zealand homes. “GIB® is New Zealand’s favourite plaster- board owing to its high quality, commitment to innovation and, its excellent customer service. This new investment will ensure we can continue to support our customers both now and in the future. ”This larger, more efficient facility will help to future proof plasterboard manufacturing in New Zealand. The location is ideal for North Island distribution, as well as being near the Port of Tauranga for delivery of raw materials used to manufacture plasterboard,” he says. Consideration for the environment has been an integral part of the project. The new plant will allow Winstone Wallboards to recy- cle its onsite waste plasterboard and reduce its manufacturing carbon footprint. A completely under cover facility has been designed from the receiving of raw materials (gypsum being the main raw material) through to final product manufacture. Significant investment has been made in efficient board dryer technology to reduce energy usage and carbon emissions. A wet electrostatic precipitator improves air discharge quality and water is obtained via underground aquifers, rather than putting pressure on the town water supply. Process wastewater is recovered and re-used back in the manufacturing process including col- lecting condensate from board dryer’s heat recovery system. Stewart says the company’s Auckland manufacturing facility will be kept functioning while commissioning the Tauriko facility to ensure a smooth transfer of operations and Auckland employees will be offered transfer opportunities.
