98 | McIndoe Construction BUILDING International experience, local focus T T Sue Russell With a footprint of 260sqm the classically styled family home presents with clean appealing lines. H amilton residential building business McIndoe Construction, led by Nic McIn- doe established early 2010, though Nic’s career in building spans back over 20 years. “I was fortunate to have worked for some really good companies and spent time build- ing in Auckland and then in London. I also contracted to some group house building businesses before forming my company.” Working with Nic is a small team of three apprentices and a qualified chippie. Asked whether the plan over time is to grow larger Nic says he’s happy at this stage with the size of the company. “It means I can easily keep an eye on the quality.” Nic feels the modern-day apprenticeship pathway works well, with more flexibility as to how apprentices achieve their units. The bal- ance between BCITO overseeing an apprentic- es training and the day to day supervision by Nic produces a quality outcome. Nic decided to enter this year’s Waikato Master Builders House of the Year Award, for the first time, in order to get a gauge on his business company’s workmanship within the broader residential sector. With a footprint of 260sqm the classically styled family home presents with clean ap- pealing lines, of Linea weatherboard, a gabled portico and box corners. “In many ways, this home bucks the trend away from the more classic look.” Once stepping inside a wine cellar nestled behind double-glass doors makes for an un- usual focal point. The well-appointed kitchen has large windows capturing the outside views, a butler’s pantry an island bench with breakfast bar. It’s been practically designed with functionality in mind with a nod to the traditional rural kitchen in the quality of the bench-tops and fittings. Extensive bi-fold doors lead out, from the living/dining area to the great outdoors and decked living spaces. Judges were so impressed with the build they awarded the home Regional Category Winner in the $600,00 - $750,000 category and Regional Gold. When Business North spoke to Nic he was busy working on his own home in Tamahere, just south of Hamilton. The large home, comprises three angled connected blocks and runs along the edge of a gully. Other projects include six duplex apartments for another building company and five other residence for GJ Gardiner Homes. Looking ahead Nic says there’s plenty of work on the horizon. “I’ve got a lot of work that I’ve priced to get underway towards the end of this year.” Asked for his assessment on the current constraints impacting on the building sector Nic says he has concerns about how long the industry generally can cope with prices and time-frames continually being pushed out. “I think our over reliance on product from overseas is really going to start to impact. It’s a big issue and the COVID situation is only highlighting our vulnerabilities.” Nic feels these times will really test the resil- ience of residential building companies. “It’s a very weird time really when you think about the unprecedented demand for new homes to be built and the issues the sector faces. It will certainly test the resilience of many building companies.” He would recommend entering the Master Builders House of the Year Awards. “Regard- less of the outcome, it’s a worthwhile experi - ence and a good process to have your work assessed by experienced professionals.” Anthony 027 786 7174 anthony@coffeyelectrical.co.nz Domestic | Renovations | Heat Pumps | Ventilation | Industrial Proud to work with McIndoe Construction WCL Group are proud to support McIndoe Construction SUPPLY • FIX • STOP • PAINT
